    Help!

I'm talking to a friend over on my journal who believes that deciding to treat women as human beings instead of toys and spoils of war is "self-emasculation." Basically, I want to know if I'm handling it properly, given that he's a hopeless case and that I have no desire to try and change his mind, but only to make him understand what's going through mine.
He's "concerned" about my well-being, if I'm reading this correctly.

    Thanks, folks.

"Freud's basic view was that every woman was a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. It did not occur to him that it might be less destructive to change the shapes of the holes rather than to knock all the corners off.

"I think what we need to do is to understand feminism as a prerequisite to saving the environment, to ending war, to ending racism. We need to understand that feminism is not for women, it's for humanity. Patriarchy does not work for men - they go and get killed in wars. Patriarchy hurts all of us. You know...the older I grow, the more I understand peace and stability as a product of balance, and human society is fundamentally imbalanced. Patriarchy is like the elephant in the room that we don't talk about, but how could it not affect the planet radically when it's the superstructure of human society?" - Ani DiFranco

Six months old, but I just found out about it so pffft:

The same motherfucker that called Cindy Sheehan a slut propositioned a female journalist on national TV.

Misogyny from a representative of the right-wing propaganda machine doesn't surprise me, but on national television? Headline News obviously condones this, as the clip is six months old and his sorry, long-winded ass is still on the air, but I'm still writing them. And no longer watching them. I prefer to get my news from teh intarwebs anyway.

I'll add Glenn Beck to my list of people who I want to beat senseless. That list is coming soon.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how common it is for liberal men to use misogyny as a way to prove they're still manly in the face of Republican taunts like those thrown at John Edwards. Examples: Keith Olberman's frequent sexist comments (outside of which I tend to think highly of him), nearly everything Bill Maher ever says about women, Alan Colmes's frequently obscenenly sexist show topics (yes, I know he's not a real liberal), etc. It seems to be a pattern; it's simply still OK to be completely misogynistic in public in this country, even if you purport to be a member of the party that at least formally claims to support women's equality.

From my LiveJournal and MySpace Blog:

Sixteen-Year-Old Threatens Sixth Grader With Rape
"Practice runs for Ben Franklin Middle School's cross-country team are getting scary. Less than a month ago, a 17-year-old Valparaiso boy was arrested for allegedly shooting at the runners with paintballs. On Monday, a 16-year-old Valparaiso High School student was arrested for allegedly yelling a threat at a girl running with the team. According to police, a red older-model Buick slowed behind the pack as the girls ran south on Campbell, near Northview, around 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 5. A teen in the back seat leaned out the passenger-side window and allegedly yelled, "Keep going or I'll rape you," at a sixth-grader."

Is it any surprise that shit like this happens, when porn teaches to dehumanize women as sex objects? I found an article that explains things well. It also talks about how the fashion industry causes women to hate themselves and their femininity. Here are my favorite excerpts:

"Much has been written on the many sinister ways that the adult entertainment industry and the fashion industry work to objectify and exploit women. But social critics have the tendency to lump these two different creatures together, along with the snarling behemoth that is the rest of Pop Culture. The Media, so goes the feminist refrain, compensates for America’s deep-rooted cultural anxiety over female independence by portraying starving stick-figures/beauty queens of impossible perfection/Barbie doll fuck toys and insisting that real women be Just Like Them, or else suffer a life of lonely, flabby s

It's a remix of a tune called "You Are My Habit" by China White (check out their page, link's in my top friends). Please give it a listen and any comments would be gratefully recieved.

    Hope you are well

    Slupbum Waller-
I really don't have much of a comment on pop psycholgy articles about gender relations . It's all quicksand without feminist analysis, and i think feminist analysis would be wasted on musings from match.com
