   absurd pop romance's Blurbs
About me:

RADIO ETIENNE HAS CEASED BROADCASTING. DUE TO MY NUMEROUS HEALTH ISSUES AND FOR OTHER REASONS I WAS UNABLE TO GIVE THE STATION AND ARTISTS THE ATTENTION THEY DESERVED. I APOLOGIZE TO THOSE WHO'VE FALLEN THROUGH THE CRACKS IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS BECAUSE OF MY INABILITY TO DEAL WITH THE STATION'S BUSINESS. SOON I HOPE TO CONVERT THIS PAGE TO A BROADER MUSIC SITE THAT WILL REFLECT MY OWN PERSONAL MUSICAL INTERESTS, NOT ALL OF WHICH FIT INTO THE STATION'S FORMAT. I HOPE YOU WILL CONTINUE WITH ME INTO THE NEW FORMAT, AND I THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT YOU'VE SHOWN OVER THESE ALMOST EIGHT YEARS.

Radio Etienne Indie Radio was a non-commercial, broadband Indie radio station on Live365.com. The station, a Live365 'Editor's Pick,' featured an eclectic mix of Indie Rock, Indiepop, College, Alternative, Punk, Proto-Punk, Twee, Lo-fi, Post-Rock, Riot Grrl, Shibuya-Kei, French (Ye-Ye) and other European Pop, Electronica, Trip-hop, Techno, Experimental, Modernist, Insurgent Country and other genres. Radio Etienne also promoted unsigned artists by including them on the station's playlist and offering them access to the station's website to promote their music and appearances. The station's blog can still be found here

My name is Cliff, but I'm known to my close friends by my middle name, Allan. I work at a public library in the St. Louis area; I'm the one who opens the cartons of books as they come in and does the initial work on the records to get them ready for cataloging. I also moderate several Yahoo! groups: The Transhumanist Conspiracy is a transhumanist, future-oriented group; absurd pop romance is a resource for Live365 Indie broadcasters; The Women of 'ER' is for fans of the female characters and the actresses who play them on the long-running NBC series; and, last but not least, Linda Kelsey Online is a fansite dedicated to the red-headed actress best known for playing reporter Billie Newman on the 1977-82 series Lou Grant.

As far as my political, social and intellectual interests go: my politics are Progressive Libertarian (with an Market Anarchist, Individualist Anarchist and Anarcho-Capitalist bent) and I'm affiliated with the Democratic Freedom Caucus and Freedom Democrats. Among the contemporary authors who've influenced my political thought are David D. Friedman ,the late Murray Rothbard, Samuel Edward Konkin III, Robert Nozick and Karl Hess, and Linda and Morris Tannehill. Goosing the Antithesis is the blog to which Francois Tremblay , who hosts the video series 'Machinery of Freedom' contributes.

The apparent contradiction between my Progressive politics and affiliation with the Democratic Party, and my Market Anarchism (usually seen as situated on the right) I explain as primarily tactical. As you can see by the content on this page, I share many positions in common with contemporary Progressives. I feel that the most realistic way forward is to engage in the political process, and that ironically the Democratic Party, in spite of it's errors, is more conducive to recovering the spirit of Liberty than is Conservatism or the thoroughy discredited Republicans. Politics alone cannot create the free society I wish to see; but capturing it to the full extent possible within the political process is a necessary prerequisite for making Market Anarchy more than mere theory.

I'm also interested in Cosmology, String and M Theory, SETI and Exobiology, Nanotechnology and Quantum Computing, current and future developments in Materials Science, life extension, Artifical Intelligence and the merging of biology and technology, the Singularity (as described by such transhumanist thinkers as Ray Kurzweil) ... in spite of which I'm also a 'polytheist' and 'neo-pagan' in the (metaphorical and psychological) neo-jungian sense... as well as being a secular humanist and atheist.

I've been a vegetarian for the last 20 years, since my early brushes with Zen Buddhism and Taoism (both of which still influence my thinking). I read a great deal on Fascism, Nazism and the Holocaust, contemporary politics, social issues and policy debates, intellectual and social history, the humanities and current events. One of my main intellectual tasks is to create a synthesis between my Progressive Libertarian qua Anarchist politics and Transhumanist thought.

I attend TV fandom conventions and collect TV and movie memorabilia (mostly ephemera such as 8x10 publicity photos and candids of actresses; cast photos, magazines, fanfic and posters). In addition to contemporary actresses, I collect on Myrna Loy, Greta Garbo, Greer Garson and the silent film goddess Louise Brooks and other silent-era actresses. I also collect Coca-Cola collectibles and other 20th century commercial graphic design and packaging, as well as art books.

I'm deeply into Modernist art; especially painting, photography and graphic design from the Post-Impressionists, Pre-Raphaelites, Symbolists and Decadents of the late 19th century through the contemporary scene. among my friends you'll see many of my favorite visual artists. I'm also interested in Modern and Postmodern architecture, furniture, graphic and interior design.

In terms of fiction: at community college I took a lot of literature classes and was really into literary criticism; I drew a lot from the Archetypal Criticism of Northrop Frye Aside from the serious stuff I also have a few guilty pleasures... apocalyptic fiction, UFO's, conspiracy theories, weird science and your odder paranormal fare. I've amassed a huge and wide-ranging library of books... most of which I haven't gotten around to reading yet because working in a Library exposes me to a massive amount of new new titles and keeps me permanently swamped.

I watch C-SPAN, Book TV and other news and current affairs programming religiously; read a lot of news and commentary ... and do a large amount of online activism and issue-oriented mailing.

Who I'd like to meet:

Ray Kurzweil, Eric Drexler, Nick Bostrom, David Pearce, Anders Sandberg, Marvin Minsky, Hans Moravec, Vernor Vinge, Daniel Dennett, Neil deGrasse Tyson, James Hillman, Douglas Hofstadter, Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawking, Ed Witten, Brian Greene, Lisa Randall, Leonard Susskind, Alan Guth, Steven Weinberg, Martin Rees, George Smoot, Frank Tipler, Freeman Dyson, Esther Dyson, Murray Gell-Mann, James Burke, Neil Stephenson, Greg Bear, Greg Egan, Gregory Benford, William Gibson, Connie Willis, Margaret Atwood, Kim Newman, David D. Friedman, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Jonathan Turley, Simon Schama, James McPherson, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Russ Feingold, Dennis Kucinich, Christopher Hitchens, Al Franken, John Dean, Arianna Huffington, Ron Reagan, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Steven Wright, Robin Williams, David Letterman, Chris Carter, Joss Whedon, David E. Kelley...

HISTORICAL FIGURES:

Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, Northrop Frye, Adam Smith, Friedrich von Hayek, Frederic Bastiat, Murray Rothbard, Ludwig von Mises, Karl Hess, Samuel Edward Konkin III, William Godwin, Emma Goldman, Benjamin Tucker, Mikhail Bakunin, Peter Kropotkin, George Orwell, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Francois-Marie Arouet (Voltaire), Rene Descartes, Robert Ingersoll, William Blake, Leonardo da Vinci, Abraham Lincoln, F.D.R. and Churchill, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Thanks for adding me. ¶ People hear only what they want, so facts alone won't wake them; they need inspiration too. ¶ This world's evils have a common root: Bullies, liars, thieves, & murderers — particularly those in public office — believe we're all separate, motivated only by self-interest, by greed & fear. They want us to share that belief; they use it to justify themselves, to manipulate us, to shape the world's political & economic systems, perpetuating war & poverty. ¶ But you & I have found something better inside ourselves & our friends. It's in everyone, if we can just wake them; we're all one flesh & blood. Let's spread that vision, for until we do our other advances will be minor & temporary. Lakoff, Waldman, Hartmann have some new ideas about *how* to spread the word. ¶ The ideological struggle doesn't have a winner yet, so no one can afford to be just a spectator. Join the movement: get involved in some way that feels right for you, if you haven't already; you'll feel better for it. Question authority. Keep fighting, loving, hoping, singing. Hand in hand, we may still be able to heal this world. ¶ For now, let's see if this meme will spread: "CLOSE GITMO BY BASTILLE DAY. PASS IT ON.
" ¶ Love, Eric
