I've written three cookbooks, and am starting to think of a topic for a fourth...however, I'm still searching for a publisher for the first three! I'm also an avid model railroad buff and an amateur herpetologist (reptile wrangler). My sons and I are also rock, gem and mineral collectors (rock hounds). My personal motto is from the late great comedian Red Skelton: "If perchance someday you're not feeling well, and some silly thing I've said or done brings a smile to your face and a chuckle to your heart, then my purpose is fulfilled."

Music
It's official: I'm a Music Junkie!! Everything from classical to jazz, country to rock, I love it all! (except rap...I'm an old Iowa farm boy and we just don't get it!). I listen to the Moody Blues, Alice Cooper, the Alan Parsons Project, ELO, Kansas, and of course, the country music I play on KUPL!
Movies
Being part Scottish, my favorite movie of all time is Braveheart, followed closely by Jason and the Argonauts (or anything by Ray Harryhausen). I'm a big fan of Jim Henson's work, such as Labyrinth, the Dark Crystal and the Storyteller series. Casablanca is also a favorite...Bogey at his best! And I'll never say no to a classic John Wayne flick...
Television
Because of my schedule I don't watch a lot of television. But I love the PBS show "Tracks Ahead" about model railroading, and "The Red Green Show" out of Canada. Funny stuff!! Why can't OPB carry these shows?? I try to catch "House" whenever possible. I'm also a fan of British comedies like Monty Python and The Goodies.
Books
The Devotional Bible for Dads. There's something for everyone in that book! J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis are high on my preferred reading list. I'm also re-reading the MYTH series of fantasy/humor by Robert Asprin. Hilarious!! And you can always find the latest edition of Model Railroader magazine near my reading chair...
Heroes
My dad. He came from a broken family, only child, lived on a farm with an uncle, aunt and a couple of cousins. Worked his way through school, then World War II, then became one of the most respected educators in the nation. He passed away in 1996, but hung around long enough to meet his grandson (my oldest son).

About me: Hi, I'm Jay Hawk...one of the weekend DJs on 98.7 FM KUPL. Check out KUPL.com for our feature, Hot 'n' Fresh, chocked full of information you'll find useful on an everyday basis. You can even take a look at my page, "Cooking With Hawk" for meal ideas and restaurant reviews. Stay tuned for all your concert information. Check out KUPL.com for more info about what's going on at KUPL!!
I have two sons and my wife (LadyHawk) has a daughter of her own. Together we make a very nice family. Been sober for nearly 17 years, by my own choice, after spending many years pickled in a bottle of whatever was available. I am also a Christian and not afraid nor ashamed to show my faith.
It's always nice to hear from KUPL listeners! And I enjoy hearing new music from independent and unsigned artists... in any format! And anyone who would like to swap recipes...bring it on!! I wish I could have met Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. His Swedish Chef character is a laugh riot!!
