Rooted in the loud, heavy guitars and punk sensibilities of Foo
Fighters, the crunching power chords and a flair for the absurd of
Cheap Trick and the sonic assault of The Who, RADIO VIOLENCE
has quickly became a cult favorite for live music fans as well as
fellow musicians in South Mississippi since hitting the scene in
2008.
Hailing from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, RADIO VIOLENCE was
formed in November 2007 by local radio personality and Illinois
native, Michael Mergens (vocals) to fill what he felt was an
obvious hardcore rock and punk void in an already large and
supportive local music scene.
Mergens enlisted the talents of Joel Trussell (drums) and guitarist
Tom McKay (lead guitar), both members of local 80’s cover band C4.
McKay's college friend Chuck Maxie rounded out the group on bass,
learning the instrument so he could join the already highly
anticipated and well publicized project, thanks to online social
networks like MySpace.
RADIO VIOLENCE quickly carved themselves a unique niche with
their covers of popular but rarely played cover songs. Along with
Mergens’ ability to mimic almost any singer including Brian Johnson
(AC/DC), McKay’s seamless arena rock guitar playing, Maxie’s
thundering bass lines and Trussell’s Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) style
drum prowess, the band’s eclectic song selections along with their
high energy and raucous stage show set them apart leaving not only
themselves but audience members exhausted but energized by the end
of the night.
