History Radu got his musical start from his father who played alto saxophone. In grammar school, Radu had the opportunity to play on some orchestral instruments. Upon graduation, his father awarded him with a bass violin. After falling in love with the bass and becoming serious about the instrument, Radu began taking private lessons with Herbie P. Lewis, Cecil McBee and Donald Palmer of the New World Symphony Orchestra. Radu was accepted into the high school of music and art where he was surrounded by a sea of young musicians. He then formed a band which consisted of Nat Adderley Jr. (pn), Noel Pointer (vln) and Buddy Williams (dms) known “Natural Essence” Upon completing his four year term, Radu attended the California Institute of the Arts where he had the honor to work and study with such great artists as Cedar Walton, Harold Mayburn, Hank Mobley, Frank Foster, John Gilmore, Pharoah Sanders, Mary Lou Williams, Billy Cobham, Billy Higgins, Cecil Payne, Byard Lancaster, Rashied Ali, Amina Claudine Myers, Oliver Lake, Nat Jones and David Baker. Radu has also performed with the Sam Wooding Orchestra, Sun Ra’s Orchestra. Radu also was the bassist in the house band for the world famous Apollo Theatre from’86-’88 where he backed such great R&B artists as “Bizmarkee”, Big Daddy Kane and the world renowned Ben Vareen. Radu has also backed Paul Simon and Jimmy Norman & the Coasters.
