No matter if she's a singular, powerful presence with her vivid voice and guitar, or if she's the ring leader, concocting an amalgam of music with her band, listening to Rae Hering is delightfully unexpected. You get the feeling that she's carefully crafted a little world of sound for every song she sings, and when she invites her unwitting audience to step inside the circus tent, they're swept away by the craziness inside. Rae Hering's solo performances are enchanting with her sweet but textured vocals, twisted, thought-provoking lyrics and masterful instrumentals. Seeing Rae with her band is an experience nouveau that brings a fantastical, theatrical air to her quirkiness; you'll find yourself humming her whimsical tunes long after the curtain has closed. In her upcoming EP, Reality Over My Head, due out early 2010, she conjures musical images as colorful as the carnival with bawdy horns, accordion and prominent piano. The stories she tells, however, hint at the darker mysteries lying only just below the surface. This songstress knows better than to give away any answers, though. She'll have you coming back time and time again for another glimpse into her hall of mirrors. If you're finding that reality's over your head, Rae Hering has an unexpected and enticing version that will overwhelm you with every song she sings.
I just got to my parent's house and, knowing that you were probably worried sick about my late night travels, am leaving this message to soothe your fears.
Also, butterscotch.
A wonderful performance today at your Pig Gig, by the way. Sorry to learn about your stuck high A key. What a bummer, dude.
I think western music should henceforth eliminate the use of that note completely. Actually, I wanted to surprise you, but I suppose this is as good of a place as any...ahem...I've decided to start a coalition to ban the high A altogether. I'll be going door to door collecting signatures starting bright and early tomorrow morning, and will work ceaselessly until I have enough people and voices to be heard by Congress. Hopefully, then, they will hear my plea. Once Congress passes it, and The Big O signs it into law, other countries will have no choice but to follow suit.
Anyways, I hope your weekend goes well. Good luck with Mankato. Is that how you spell that? Hmm, Mankato....makes me think of "mako shark." Are they people there ruthless? I've never been.
Well then, goodnight to you. And thanks for the suggestion about using the River metaphor in the song I'm working on. It's both ripe and safe. Kind of like water-wings.
May you dream of dancing grilled cheese sandwiches!
Hey Rae, I don't know if you remember us, but we played with you a few years back at cafe coco. Just dropping a line to say hey. Your music is beautiful, keep up the writing and let us know if you come down to florida! -Dish
