Rae was influenced as a child from listening to the
songs of the 50s/60s her parents and grand parents played on their gramophones ... and from the 70s/80s/90s mainly soul/jazz/blues singers ... All the warm, smooth, melting vocals when singers sang their songs close to the mic' emoting every word they sang, so when listening to their vocal you feel they're singing directly to YOU ... Those featured in the slide show above & list below exemplify Raes' musical heroes, heroines and influences, old and new ...

The fusion of music in the movie West Side Story also had a huge influence on Rae. Later, when life took her all over mainland Spain, the Baleares and the Canaries she fell in love with Latin music, particularly Spanish Classical Guitar heard on balmy evenings when strolling barefoot along the beach. Memories of "footprints in the sand". Nothing like the sound of the sea with the waves gently lapping against the shore with some lovely music echoing in the background and the sea glistening by the light of the silvery moon!.... ('let's take a walk together, near the open shore, hand in hand you and I, let's 'Cherish' every moment, we have been given, as time passes by...') - Love the song 'Ballad de Adelaide' I think it's called, classical peace, latin sound, beautiful on acoustic guitar, also love 'Cavatina' which also has that acoustic, gentle guitar sound and I've heard that played often by Latin guitarists whilst sitting late night/early hours of morning at a restaurant by the sea - evokes powerful and beautiful memories of a feeling of peace and calm with the world

Rae definately HASN'T been influenced by overcooked, overcomplicated vocals where the effort to be a power singer and prove technical ability overshadows the true meaning and words of the song being sung. ( Rae can't STAND that 'playing with the note' thing and sreechy high thing that a lot of the modern singers do, yes, it shows their range off, but it often (in Raes' opinion, murders the song!)...However, power singers admired = Donna Summer (effortless power), Chaka Khan (eg: her version of Funny Valentine- on Waiting to Exhale + Ain't Nobody - terrific dance track)...Rae enjoys singing Burt Bacharach covers (Valley of the Dolls, Walk on By, House is not a Home, Anyone who Had a Heart etc) and is constantly updating her repertoire to add songs she feels would be enjoyed by her audience and which suit her range/tone/phrasing and overall image, some of these being songs originally covered by male vocalists .....

Along with Jazz/Blues/Soul & Latin Rae loves FUNK - DISCO - too (anythin' from the late 70s/80s that they play on HEART FM on Friday nights - that got people up on the mirrored disco floor dancing around the handbags.. loves : - Johnson Brothers - Whispers - Commodores (especially 'Nightshift') - Sugar Hill Gang (the best and ORIGINAL rap song !) - Disco Inferno - Temptations (Papa was a Rollin' Stone)- Prince - (The Vault album) - Earth Wind and Fire (Fantasy/After the Love has Gone/Boogie Wonderland/September etc!) - Chic (not so much 'le Freak 'as their LESS commercial tracks on THAT album - Warm Summer Night and Chic Cheer etc) - Rose Royce (fantastic memories!) - Eddie Kendricks (Keep on Truckin' Baby) - William de Vaughn (Diamond in the back, sunroof top diggin' the scene...) - Timmy Thomas (Everybody wants to live Together) - Imagination (Body Talk - camp but sexy track!(same vibe as 'Let's get it on'...) - Heatwave (Boogie Nights etc) - The Jacksons (Can you Feel it) - & Michael Jackson (Off the Wall was a great dance album & so many of his ...) all that 'can't sit still' stuff! (Rae really CAN'T! sit still to this kind of music, for example, whilst working in Mallorca with her right leg in plaster (torn ligaments from falling sideways in a pair of wedge sandals - not too much Sangria! honestly!) she used to still dance at the discos spinning around on the plastered leg in true handbag 'I will Survive' style! ;) )...

Sounds Like
Hmmm ... Sounds like - Rae!!! ... those who've heard the demo cd vocal and listened to Rae sing live have different ideas regarding who her performance compares to, so ... rather than make comparisons to other vocalists, probably it is easier to suggest who Rae is influenced by rather than who she sounds like ... (think along the lines of the slow, long note phrasing of Roberta Flack & Eva Cassidy with a little bit of Peggy Lee/Julie London/Elkie Brooks/Carole King ... ) ... (and maybe a little bit of breathy Doris Day ... ) - Rae would also love to chill the vocal down when not working with backing tracks (which rely on strong vocal and restrictive phrasing ... ) so she'd enjoy trying out jazz/blues/latin in a less formed style where the vocal just flows with the music in a freefall kind of way... any musicians looking to collaborate - Rae would be keen to hear from you... send a message by myspace mail or myspace comment, or you can leave a voice message on the player below .....

" During one of my searches for really good sounding music....pouring through the myrid of pages and webs....listening...hearing.... I happened accross Rae Marnie. The track that was playing was "Very Thought Of You" and it slowed me down. As usual it is the first twenty seconds of a track that either catches or doesn't. If it doesn't, I move on. "Very Thought Of You" by Rae Marnie stopped me dead in my tracks. At this point I had no choice but to listen to the rest of her tracks, just to make sure what I heard was real. Immediately swept away by the sound.....the touch of it. Immediately I contacted Rae and asked if she would please send me her tracks so they could be shared with our listeners.
Most definately a "world class" jazz-blues singer, Rae Marnie will take you away from what you are focused upon. Grab you. Soften your tenseness and kick you right back. It is no wonder that Rae travels to exotic places singing her song.
Give Rae Marnie a listen. You are promised to be touched and lifted away from whatever it is that has distracted. "
