"The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" is the title of a book written by Robert Tressell,
details of which are here.
Julian Gaskell & his Ragged Trousered Philanthropists are a four (or five depending on weather conditions) piece outfit from Cornwall who play garage-punk-klezmer-balkadelia. Having played hundreds of gigs in obscure locations around the south west since forming in 2006, their music has mutated and grown into what is on their forthcoming album “Here the repellent harpies make their nests”, due for release in August 2009, which can be described thus...
Mambo accordion, polka washboard, romantic fiction, darkness falling at the end of a drunken afternoon, a failed trip to a cashpoint, new balkan wave prog ska, space dub balkan dance off, the sound of a flourescent green guitar amp being tortured until it screams like a thunderstorm over the vale of avalon, ukrainian-yiddish klezmer surfers taking their revenge on the laid back cornish dudes for decades of grinding the 'n'roll out of surf rock, singing whilst slowly dragging a carcass to it's final resting place, the kind of royalty that is hung, drawn and quartered before being left in a dustbin for the seagulls, creeping lounge jazz which might appeal to those with too much money to handle, Bulgariadelic folk onslaught, world music for hairy men with big flares and aviator shades. The knees-up in the face of adversity. A penryn street party to celebrate the street being dug up.
The album was produced and recorded by Julian Gaskell in May/June 2009 in a Cottage by the sea near falmouth, Cornwall using a Soundcraft Series II desk rescued from a Bolton scrapheap, a great british spring drainpipe reverb, analogue space echo and a reel to reel tape machine borrowed from the BBC in 1982, and only the most arcane methods of microphone placement and mixing.
The classic 2007 debut album "Julian Gaskell & his Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" - is available on CD here for £10 (plus a quid P&P) - that's 18 tracks and 69 minutes of this nonsense in a digipack with fancy artwork, lyrics and all the trimmings.
Alternatively, you can download the album (as well as previous releases by Julian Gaskell and Icons of Poundland) from our fancy new download store.
Or else, if you want to pay more money for the same thing, get it from itunes here

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
