So many filmmakers, both studio and independent, concern themselves with a film's marketability, taking away here and adding there to sell a few more tickets and diluting the story in the process. As storytellers, our first responsibility above all else is the telling of the story, to tell it the way it needs to be told...to tell a good story well. You can't do that if you're making your creative decisions based on whether or not you're going to offend this person or alienate that one or will general audiences "get it." Hollywood can do that all day long and best of luck to them, but that's not what we do here.
Quentin Tarantino once said that he doesn't make movies to please everybody, he makes movies that he would want to see because if he would enjoy watching his movie, then there's got to be at least a few other people out there who would enjoy it as well and that's who he makes his movies for. Hear, hear!
If many enjoy our films, that's wonderful. That means we've brought entertainment to the masses and helped them enjoy themselves for a time. If only a few, they deserve it no less and their experience shouldn't be cheapened just so more will approve. Simply put, if you like what we do, we're very happy for you; if not, you're always free to change the channel.
Our job is to entertain; our obligation is to the story. The story comes first.
