Authentic, electric and unrestricted— JimiJames explodes the standard record industry format. The visionary singer-songwriter is a wild card among music artists. She moves freely in various directions without leaving her audience behind.
Born Moria Denson, the Los Angeles, CA native began performing at the age of six and routinely attended acting and dance classes. Though Moria had no technical training in music, her voice and passion was undeniable.
“I started working with a group named Somethin’ for the People when I was 14, and they produced a three-girl group, of which I was a member. That’s where I gathered a lot of my technique, along with, of course just listening to all kinds of music.”
The group separated, and Moria continued acting and dancing. She majored in dance at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and then went on to study Theatre Arts at North Carolina A&T State University. A runner-up amongst 300 collegiate competitors for the Irene Ryan Award at the 1999 National American College Theatre Festival, Moria also performed the leading role in David Richmond, an original play, whose cast was awarded first place out of 1000 plays chosen to compete at The Kennedy Center.
After graduating with honors and a B.F.A. in Acting, Moria set off to her hometown to audition for television and film. In the meantime, she began writing music with aspirations of establishing herself as a songwriter for professional recording artists. Then she began writing for her own project; developing a style of music that was raw, conceptually unique, and melodic with harmonies that evoke the soul.
“Music seemed to be right at my fingertips. I began recording, put acting aside and decided to fully dedicate myself to my music. I changed my name to JimiJames, after my father, and I am now using my music as a launching tool for a long line of success.”
Jimi began writing, producing and singing her records. She’s worked with established producers such as Sauce (Somethin’ for the People), Karriem Riggins (Common, Erykah Badu, Slum Village), Anthony “Stereo” Waldrip (Mya, Christina Milian), Derek “Big Tank” Thorton (Aaliyah, Timberland), Soulshock and Karlin (Mary J. Blige, Monica, Usher, Fantasia) and more.
JimiJames’ independent debut is a refreshing showcase of versatility and imagination. Inspired by a dramatic range of artists in Hip-Hop, Pop, Rock, and old school R&B, she says her early influences were Prince, Madonna, and Cyndi Lauper. Later, she listened to Brandy, Missy Elliott, and SWV. Jimi’s theatrical background is highly evident in her songwriting. She tells stories and paints vivid pictures, while exploring the truth with universal appeal. Her unique sound distinguishes her from other singers and songwriters in Pop, Hip-Hop, and Soul.
JimiJames The Truth has 11 tracks that display a colorful range of boldness and vulnerability. The album is currently selling on CdBaby.com and is available for download on iTunes and several other online distributors . The Los Angeles, CA and Atlanta, GA markets have been the focus of promotion, independent sales, and live performances. However, the music is also spreading abroad, as there are websites in several countries which offer JimiJames The Truth for free download.
In the summer of 2006, KCRW 89.9 FM Radio DJ, Garth Trinidad premiered JimiJames The Truth on his highly respected syndicated radio show Chocolate City in Southern California. The song “Role Play” was selected for RE:UP Magazine’s Anniversary compilation CD, and Manual 12, the January 2007 issue of RE:UP Magazine featured a story celebrating Garth Trinidad’s 10 years on the air and gave JimiJames a notable mention.
In addition to traditional radio spins, Sirius Satellite radio’s 1 rated music segment on Hip-Hop Nation (Channel 40), DJ Jamad’s Afromentals program featured JimiJames as a host on Operation Hotcombs; a special one-hour guest segment showcasing new artists and their current projects.
The circulating “buzz” along with JimiJames’ strong online presence has created the need for a more robust business organization with expansive marketing resources and mainstream distribution. JimiRah Entertainment is positioning itself for private and major label investment while JimiJames is currently recording her highly anticipated sophomore album So Janky, which is due for release in the fall.
