Initial Showing of Artwork by RailV y Tomás to be held at Flying M in March
(Opening: March 6, 2008—First Thursday)
BOISE, ID — After 12 years of collaboration in music, words, art and life, RailV y Tomás present their first gallery showing at Flying M Coffeehouse during the month of March.
Better known by their separate alter egos, David Colcord and Tomás Montaño, the two are finally bringing together their varied and separate talents in one show using the moniker, RailV y Tomás. The show, entitled Three Different Women, Three Different Poems will be on display from March 6th, First Thursday, through April 2nd at Flying M Coffeehouse, 500 West Idaho Street, in downtown Boise. 3DW/3DP brings together the illustrative concepts of Montaño and the screenprinting talents of Colcord. The pieces incorporate the poetry of rail v. codcodd (Colcord’s pen name), culled from his 1999 collection, bar napkin, obtaining the title from one of the sections therein as the title for the show.
Montaño used Colcord’s words as inspiration while crafting the art that would eventually be silk-screened, allowing the words to move his hands through the design. The result is an effeminate collection of, sometimes abstract, faces and places splashed with color and streaked with wavering, ink blot lines and dots. Taking inspiration from Warhol, Bukowski, Patchen, Lobb & Picasso, among others, the designs found their final resting spot on various old kitchen cabinet doors and cutting boards. In preparation for the show, Montaño and Colcord have been hanging out on Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons since early October 2007, in an 8x12 Stor Mor shed in Colcord’s back yard. The ManHut, as the shed is widely known, although cramped, contains all the necessary tools for the screenprinting process. Keeping the door to the ManHut closed against the harsh coldness of a Boise winter, wrecked on the noxious fumes of the chemicals used to clean the screens, the two would often work into the early morning hours to complete a piece. The final eleven pieces for 3DW/3DP are the product of myriad hours of collaborative work between Montaño and Colcord.
Colcord has been screenprinting for a living in the Boise area for over 20 years, since he was just 14 years of age. He majored in English with a writing emphasis, receiving his B.A. in 1997 from Boise State. He found most of his inspiration for bar napkin at the bottom of a bourbon glass, in the dark and smoky corners of downtown Boise’s popular watering hole, 10th Street Station. Spending his days screenprinting “jock art” onto baseball and football jerseys, he was more than excited to take on the project when first proposed by Montaño.
Montaño’s been sketching and doodling on various substrates since the late 70s. He wrote his first song with his father’s classical guitar in the 4th grade, back in 1982, and has been banging away on various musical instruments and belting out bad poetry and lyrics ever since...................................................................
