    Rainbow Center's Interests
GeneralTacoma! LGBTIQ equality, safety, and civic representation, Transgender health care access, Safer Schools, Smoking Cessation, Queer Youth support and general grooviness.
MusicWe are somewhat embarrassed about how much of our listening falls into the "girls with guitars" category. Except for Sleater Kinney. There's no reason to be embarrassed over listening to Sleater Kinney.
MoviesBut I'm a Cheerleader, Serenity, Latter Days, Goldfish Memory
TelevisionTelevision is for straight people! (heh, now if you ask us what's in our netflix que . . . .)
BooksToo many to reasonably relate, but we highly recommend Cheryl's transgender issues book club. The reading's fascinating, and the conversation is intelligent and thoughtful. If you really want to know the breadth of our collection, stop by and check out our lending library!
HeroesRainbow Center Volunteers

Rainbow Center thrives on a vibrant community of volunteers. The following is a list of activities our volunteers make possible:

Speakers’ Bureau – An important part of the work the Rainbow Center does is to educate professionals and the general public about the GLBT community. Research shows that people are less hostile towards gay people once they have met someone who positively self-identifies. With the Speakers’ Bureau, volunteers are trained to make public presentations so that audiences can hear the diverse stories of GLBT individuals in their own words.

Administration – If you have daytime hours available during the week, consider becoming an administrative volunteer. With a part time staff of two, the Rainbow Center utilizes the services of reliable volunteers in the office setting to make sure the job gets done right. Assistance with file keeping, data entry, compiling statistics, web research and telephones are always needed.

Technology Support – With a technology grant from The Gill Foundation, the Rainbow Center now has two computers and fairly sophisticated software. If you enjoy web maintenance, troubleshooting, and creative problem solving, the Rainbow Center can use your help.

Special Events – Successful events like our Spring and Fall Flings, and our educational programs only happen with the support of dedicated volunteers. Whether you are a planner at heart and wish to serve on a committee, or if you are a worker-bee present on the day of the event, the Rainbow Center needs your help.

Board Membership – The Rainbow Center Board of Directors is a volunteer body that governs the policies of the RC. Board members are nominated by the Board Development Committee, are elected for two-year terms, and are expected to participate fully in center activities. If you wish to apply for Board Membership, please contact the Rainbow Center office at (253) 383-2318.

MySpace

Try the BEST MySpace Editor and MySpace Backgrounds at MySpace Toolbox! The Rainbow Center mission is to eliminate discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity by providing education, resources, information and opportunities for empowerment to individuals and organizations within the south Puget Sound area. We find our activities falling into three general categories:

Educate – to provide information to all individuals and groups about the LGBTIQA community in an effort to eliminate harmful stereotypes. See our Education page for more information.

Advocate – to ensure that LGBTIQA individuals receive the same basic human rights as all other citizens of Pierce County, the State of Washington and the United States

Celebrate – to acknowledge pride in who we are as valuable, creative members of a diverse population in this county, state and country

Our board of directors is made of long-time Tacoma activists and community members from all walks of life. They include:

Co-Chair: S. Troy Christensen has been with the board since 2003. He is Executive Director of The Geneva Foundation and holds Master's Degrees in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, and Health Administration. Troy is involved in many social justice issues including ending homelessness, and equal rights for all minority classes.

Co-Chair/Treasurer: Patricia (Pat) McIntyre, joined the board in the summer of 2006 and immediately was volunteered for the 2006 Black and White Gayla planning committee. A Washington State native and a resident of Pierce County since 1972, Pat served in the US Army at both the Pentagon and Ft.Lewis. She received her BA in Social Welfare from Pacific Lutheran University; she also holds a degree in business management and is a long time Human Resource professional and Boeing employee working in the field of disability management. Pat currently serves on the Boeing Diversity Council as well as the Executive Board of the Boeing Puget Sound Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender ( LGBT) employee resource group, the BEAGLES, which celebrates diversity and mission is to promote employee resources and mentoring in the workplace. Pat is the former steering committee chair and current member of the Pride Foundation (Pierce County), she is a dedicated supportee of Pierce County Pride and an advocate for Tacoma's queers. In addition to LGBT activities, she supports the Alzheimer's Foundation in honor of her mother, Virginia McIntyre as well as individuals and their families who are facing or have succumbed to this horrific disease.
