WHAT IS THE RAINFOREST PROJECT?

Even though tropical forests seem a long way away to most of us, they play a vital role in all of our lives, every day. In fact, they are essential for our wellbeing because they are the world’s natural air-conditioning and thermostat systems. They act as the cooling belt around the centre of the world and they produce much of the rainfall essential to the demands of the world’s growing population.

Rainforests absorb nearly a sixth of all man-made CO2 emissions but they are currently being destroyed at the rate of a football pitch every four seconds. To make matters worse, when these forests are burnt for agriculture or mining for example, they release all that stored CO2 back into the atmosphere. The scale of this burning means that CO2 emissions from tropical deforestation are greater than those from the entire global transport network annually.

It is for these reasons that HRH The Prince of Wales set up The Prince's Rainforests Project with the clear ambition of 'Making the trees worth more alive than dead.' The Project team is working with Governments, businesses and non profits to find solutions to deforestation and to ensure that an Emergency Package for rainforests is agreed by the end of this year.

On May 5th, The Prince's Rainforests Project will launch a worldwide campaign to raise awareness of this issue. This is where you can play your part. We are looking for a global gathering to create a climate of awareness and demonstrate support for urgent action to tackle rainforest destruction.
