PHOTOGRAPHER COLIN YOUNG-WOLFF DOCUMENTS THE BAND
In May of 2007, Santa Monica-based photographer Colin Young-Wolff jumped in the van with Raining Jane for eight days, to document their lives on the road. It was the end of another four-month tour, wrapping up in Oregon and Washington. The photos below were taken in and around Seattle, where Raining Jane played at Columbia City Theater with Jonathan Kingham on May 21st. Colin has sorted through many, many photos and put together the following "Day In The Life Of Raining Jane" slide show. Thanks Colin! Raining Jane is an eclectic rock-folk band based in Los Angeles but on the road more often than not. Forming in 1999 out of the UCLA music community, Raining Jane was able to quit their day jobs in 2004 to pursue music full-time. Since then, they have toured relentlessly, averaging 120 shows per year. Taking on all business and artistic responsibilities (songwriting, booking, web design, driving and so much more), they have become a notable example of independent success in the music industry, while simultaneously carving their own niche artistically.
On March 4th, 2008, Raining Jane released their third record, "Paper Nest." This EP was made with Brad Gordon at Magic Carpet Studios in Los Angeles. Brad produced the record and graces it with his instrumental talents (various keys, guitars and banjo). Paper Nest features eight tracks of Raining Jane originals. Sara Bareilles makes a guest appearance singing backup vocals on the song "Clementine."
Aside from touring and recording, the ladies of Raining Jane have kept themselves very busy with several other exciting projects. In the summer of 2007, all four band members volunteered at the Rock and Roll Camp For Girls, in Portland, Oregon, where they coached young girls in the fine art of making noise and rocking out. Raining Jane has collaborated with Jason Mraz since January 2007, writing and workshoping songs at Mraz's studio. The band co-wrote the song "A Beautiful Mess" with Mraz, which was released on his EP "We Sing." This song will also appears on Mraz’s full-length album "We Sing We Dance We Steal Things." Raining Jane is also featured on Mraz's "Silent Love Song," which was recently released on a Fire Relief CD compilation benefitting victims of the 2007 San Diego wildfires. In February 2008, Raining Jane performed several private showcases at the International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, Tennessee. They also presented a private showcase room at the conference, The Rain Room, which hosted performances by 30 incredible artists. Raining Jane has also recently toured with Sara Bareilles, Rachael Yamagata and Willy Porter.
Musically, Raining Jane’s path is constantly growing and shifting. The band has always aimed to challenge themselves and each other to write great songs, and to never stagnate. Their sound is defined by the merging of four songwriters, three vocalists, and a variety of instruments: acoustic and electric guitars, drum kit, bass guitar, cello, cajon and sitar. Stunning vocal harmonies provide the thread in songs that are rooted in rock-folk, but pushed and pulled in a variety of directions. On top of solid musical and songwriting chops, Raining Jane delivers a performance that is thoughtful, playful and utterly engaging. And guiding Raining Jane's journey is a passion for music and a desire to make a positive difference in the world, one song at a time.
