Here are some things you should know about Raised by Pandas. It might not help you sleep better at night, but it will, hopefully, encourage you to take this ride with us.
I started Raised by Pandas in 2007 after having quit music for a few years. I was born and raised in Brooklyn and played in a coverband there for 10 years, all the while writing songs that weren't getting heard. I broke out on my own and found myself on Ave. A at the Sidewalk Cafe. For the next three years I emersed myself in the Anti-Folk scene playing around Brooklyn and Manhattan and working the soundboard at the Sidewalk Cafe. I recorded on a TASCAM 4-track in the extra bedroom of our apartment in Bay Ridge until we needed to turn it into a nursery. After the birth of my daughter in 2003 I put my guitar in its case, closed up the four-track and concentrated on my family. In 2005 we left the claustrophobic streets and crowded subways for Austin. It doesn't take much to imagine what happens next: in the live music capital of the world all the old songs and some new ones begin haunting me in bookstores and bars, in restaurants and airports, coffee shops and parks. And so in 2007, with my daughter's and wife's blessings, I began gigging again under the name Raised by Pandas. Mel joined me a few months later on drums and we've been recording on a small digital portastudio in the cafeteria of the school where we work--we're pretty low-fi and having fun. We've finally found a studio that we feel comfortable with (translation--fits our budget) and are planning to start recording our first EP in the new year. So here are our songs--our imperfect offerings--for you and your friends. We hope you like them enough to spread the word about the Pandas and to take this ride with us through the coffee shops and bars of Austin to who know where. Afterall, who wouldn't want to travel around with a panda?
