   Rake Art 's Blurbs
About me:
Rake is derived from the Old English definition of "Rakish" or a "dissolute man of fashion". This reconceptualization takes an idea of developing oneself upwards through building and being apart of community. The dissolution of what is fashionable about society, culture, the arts, and business, then reconstituting them to form a structure of inevitable expansion, i.e. the community...one that will grow as long as it is rejuvenated, its purpose being healthy and not solely about the individual.

The good Book of Rake is called "The Culture of Rake - the Revolution of Consciousness". This title deserves to be pondered and we believe the explanation will be a surprise for most.

The Witch by Annie Aube

The Witch

Once upon a time in a far away land, Ireland to be more precise if you like, there lived a farmer. Now this farmer was having serious problems. He had many cows which at one time had produced the most wonderful milk, but now they produced nothing. One day he became so desperate that he called to his house the old fairy woman who lived at the other end of the village. She told him to kill one of his many cows and to boil its blood in a pot and from this she would be able to tell him who had been stealing his milk, because she said it was a witch who was doing so. The farmer killed the cow and cut it open, the flesh inside was rotting and the blood oozed out the color of oil. What the witch saw in that boiling pot of blood will never be known but she did tell the farmer what he should do next. So the next night the farmer and his friend took their dogs and riffles and waited in the bushes on the edge of the pasture. Eventually well after the moon had risen there came a very large rabbit to the field and it started to drink milk out of each of the cows, the farmer and his friend waited until it had gotten almost the last cow (because they knew it would be harder for it to run when it was full of milk), and then they put their dogs on its trail. The dogs chased the rabbit as fast as they could, but they could only snag its foot. The farmers and their dogs chased the rabbit to a neighbor’s house, when they went inside, they found a woman of the village covered with milk, dead and bleeding out of her leg. And so thus the mystery of the milkless cows was solved. –Retold by Annie Aube from a Celtic folktale by W.B. Yeats

Vino Paradiso Hosts Eerie “Funeral Portraits”
Halloween is just around the corner, but you won’t have to visit a haunted house to get a little creeped out. One of our favorite wine bars is hosting artist Mike Egan’s dark, yet beautiful work. Egan’s artwork, influenced by his experience working in funeral homes, will be on display at Vino Paradiso beginning Oct. 3 (First Wednesday Reception from 7-10 p.m. that night) through Nov. 25. 417 NW 10th ave, 503-295-9536,PortlAND,OR

Egan takes a bit of a humorous approach to his work:

“I like to take a serious subject like death and mix it up with bright colors so that it is more inviting to the viewer. The color is what draws people in, then they realize that they are looking at a skeleton throwing up blood, I love it.”

For more about his work, check out this interesting interview at Our Art Site.
