As a kid, I remember listening to my dad's record, MONK in quintet with Frank FOSTER, Ray COPELAND, Art BLACKEY, and Curley RUSSELL... There were two mysteries about this album: First of all, a bit of white paint was so encrusted in the vinyl at the beginning of "we see" that each time it was played, it started in the middle of the song. I've always wondered how it began...and where that paint ever came from! Secondly, since there had only been 4 songs recorded, the record was so much smaller and so much heavier than a normal 33 ( that it looked like an old 78.) All of this seemed extremely strange to me, but curiously enough, not the music that I listened to with such pleasure. I've always felt very close to MONK's musical universe. undoubtedly, it's because of his sense of humor immediately found within his composition, and the thematic and repetitive treatment of his playing (which is similar to mine). It's also for the personal and mysterious manner that MONK has of undoing and reconstructing with such perfect use of rhythm and silence. Here is my explanation for this new CD. I've taken the liberty of arranging some of THELONIOUS' songs that I love so much in my very own special way among which is "we see."

Je me rappelle qu'enfant, j'écoutais ce disque de mon père, MONK en quintet avec Frank FOSTER, Ray COPELAND, Art BLACKEY, et Curley RUSSELL..
Il y avait deux mystères dans cet album :
Premièrement, une croûte de peinture blanche était incrustée dans le vinyl au début de « we see », si bien qu'il fallait mettre à chaque fois le morceau au milieu. Je me demandais constamment ce qu'il y avait au début.....et d'où venait cette peinture!
D'autre part, quatre titres seulement étaient gravés si bien que le disque était beaucoup plus petit et plus lourd qu'un 33 tours normal (on aurait dit un ancien 78 tours).Tout ceci me semblait extrêmement mystérieux, mais curieusement pas la musique, que j'écoutais avec un réel plaisir..
Il me semble avoir été toujours très proche de l'univers musical de MONK, sans doute à cause de son sens immédiat de l'humour que l'on retrouve dans ses compositions, du traitement thématique et répétitif de son jeu ( c'est aussi ma façon de jouer), mais aussi pour la manière personnelle et mystérieuse que MONK a , en défaisant et reconstruisant avec une si parfaite utilisation du rythme et du silence.
Voici donc l'explication de cet album, où je me suis permis d'arranger à ma façon et sans complexe quelques titres de THELONIOUS que j'aime beaucoup,dont « we see » haha ! ..
