Hello - seems like the Mail have taken some liberties there, somehow the piece doesn't seem quite your style. The bits about 24-hour drinking particularly interested me: I'd be interested to hear how much of what was printed on the subject is your view and how much is the Mail's tweaking. Speaking from my admittedly somewhat removed vantage point, I can't see that the change in the law has made much difference to crime levels, or prosecutions at least: and on a personal note, I spent ages traipsing around Camden at about 1am on Sunday trying to find somewhere to get a drink (I'd been in a cinema til 11:30, I wasn't on a bender, I swear) and was disappointed. Not even an off licence. Maybe it's just been too long since I was last there on the lash in the early hours of the morning. I am getting on a bit now after all. Just in my experience not too many places have enthusiastically taken to the idea of being open til 5am, except clubs that did it anyway and offies on Green Lanes that have been 24-hour for years. :o)

Take care,
Vi

You have to do the work once a week, and you meet with a supervisor at the start of the order to work out a day you can do it to minimise the effect on your work. If you have to take time off work, you have to take time off work. It's a punishment, no matter what your job is. Got a problem with that? Don't beat people into comas then. Imagine how much the victim's work has been affected. (Sorry, I have absolutely no truck with people whining about it being inconvenient to turn up to probation or community service. I can be a little abrupt. "John, did I hit the policeman/steal the car/make you sell drugs? No? Then don't blame me for you having to finish work early to come here then. See you at three o'clock sharp!")

Thanks for the additional info: I wasn't suggesting that the victim not being on duty mitigates the crime, just that if he was it would aggravate it, if you see what I mean.

PS - It would take a lot less than a year to do 200 hours Unpaid Work. Round my way at least you do a working day of a fairly usual length, roughly 9 - 5, so that'd take about 28 weeks to finish by my reckoning. In London you get credited for travelling time if you have to work outside of the borough that you live in, so that could be about two extra hours credited every week. Don't know how it works anywhere else though.

Hello - I tried to post this comment on the blog re your "Free Assault" post, but don't have a blogware account:

"Jesus H Christ. I am really appalled by this. Unpaid Work alone for a GBH conviction? Should not happen. I have seen a couple of GBH cases that have been towards the very lowest end of the scale that got a community sentence (including probation too so they have to spend some time facing up to the consequences of their actions at least), with some really exceptional mitigation, but this is clearly something else.

If I'd got to do the pre-sentence report in this case it'd have taken a stone miracle - and probably a lobotomy - for me to recommend a community sentence, because of the severity of the injuries alone. I agree with previous commentors that their jobs should make it worse, not better. Individuals capable of that kind of violence should not be working in the service of the public. If they'd been convicted of it prior to getting their jobs I'm sure they wouldn't even have been considered, the Criminal Records Bureau check would surely have screened them out as unsuitable. But because they've already got the job it's OK??

Does anyone know more about the circumstances of the attack? Was the victim on duty? If so that should be a serious aggravating factor - he's in service of the public too, and if he'd been a policeman it would've been Go Directly To Jail, Do Not Pass Go, even for a much less serious assault."

This business of not being able to comment on your own page is very odd... I just did a Google image search for the pic of Death, I don't have a scanner. Can't remember where it's from, which I know is poor form.

Hello, thanks for the add - I read the blog regularly and it's always entertaining and/or food for thought. I'm a probation officer (for some heinous sins in a past life, I presume) and can often identify with your thoughts on some of your punters. At least it's my exclusive remit to deal with people being aggressive and messed up, rather than having that get in the way of trying to save people's lives.
