Bio
..Born in Los Angeles, Randy was raised in a musical environment. His mother taught piano and voice, as well as performances in local musicals. Being surrounded by artists, actors and musicians, the creative spark was lit at an early age. After moving to Hawaii, his experience in the real world of a working musician began as his mother took him along to jobs playing hotel piano bars and singing with a jazz combo, as well as starting a music school with the top musicians of the island. Exposing him to the real world of a working musician as his mother tackled the job of raising a family as an educator, entertainer, and entrepreneur. On the job with mom he was exposed to a variety of tunes that would be the foundation for his versatility and wide range of repertoire. During this time highlights included going to gigs and parties with mom, meeting Dave Brubeck, and even living next door to bluesman Taj Mahal. After some attempts at piano and drums, Randy was inspired by his brother to take up the guitar. After a few frustrating months, his father accidentally bought him a bass guitar. Immediately hooked on bass, his brother now had a bass player to jam with... ..Developing in the rich San Francisco bay area music scene of the early ‘90’s, Randy performed in a variety original rock, funk, jazz, blues bands, symphonic orchestras and big bands. As his musical horizons expanded, the time had come for some intensive study on the Double bass. After repeated request for lessons, he began study with local bass educator Lea Maples. Randy’s passion and commitment to the double bass drew Lea out of retirement for the next few years of tutelage. In 1993 Randy was accepted to the renowned Mannes / New School jazz and contemporary music program at New York City’s New School for Social Research. During his time in New York he studied bass with Reggie Workman, Andy McKee, and Steve Neil. The real lessons, however, were accompanying his teachers to gigs, getting to see the music, and talk about the gig afterwards, getting schooled by the masters as they worked. A very special experience was the opportunity to play Charles Mingus’ famous dragon head bass. As a graduate of the New School Jazz program he received additional studies from master musicians Chico Hamilton, Andrew Cyrill, Arnie Lawrence, Makanda McIntyre, as well as composition with Henry Martin and Gil Goldstein... ..His strong bass skills and creative energy have kept him in demand for a variety of work with renowned jazz innovators such as Sonny Simmons, Donald “Duck” Bailey Ricky Ford, Joel Futterman, Royal Hartigan, Fred Houn, Eddie Gale, Tony Malaby, Reggie Workman, Henry Kaiser, Weasel Walter, William Winant, as well as banjo national champions Gary “Biscuit” Davis, Sonny Smith. Guitar national champ Mitch Corbin (David Bromberg, Dave Grisman ) and performances with Al Perkins ( Rolling Stones, Graham Parsons, Flying Burrito Bros.), Larry Atamanuik ( Allison Krause and Union Station), a member of Richie Owens and the farm bureau, contracts performing nightly in Broadway productions and backing up headline acts aboard the Holland America Cruise Line ships. .. ..As an active educator he has conducted lectures, enrichment classes and clinics for the San Francisco public school system, presented classes on improvisation and jazz theory, as well as privately teaching bass, guitar, and piano. Randy has been involved in composing music for jazz ensembles, pieces for strings, piano, and solo bass. His skills as a songwriter have been employed by developing repertoire for new artists as well as contributing material for his current projects. Most recently Randy has been recording and performing with Dohee Lee, Ike Levin, Allen Orr Hunt Trio, Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau, and the Weasel Walter Quartet... .. ...... -
