Rapsody is the new female force in hip hop, and she's about to blaze the trail for the new generation of women who rely on their skills to make marks in the music world. She is Grammy Award winning producer 9th Wonder's first artist on his label, Its A Wonderful World Music Group/Jamla, and she sets the bar high for all following labelmates, male or female.
Paying homage to her hip hop godmothers MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Lauryn Hill, this Snow Hill, North Carolina native doesn't just represent the female side of hip hop- the b-girl, the rapper, and the dj who rocks the party just as well as any man. She is an emcee who represents hip hop beyond lines of gender, proving that anything "the boys" can do, she can do too. Her skills as an emcee are the highlight of her presentation, not her inherent feminine twist.
Rapsody is featured on Dream Merchant 2, 9th Wonder's first solo venture since signing with Atlantic. She is also the first lady of the Carolina super crew Kooley High. "I started writing spoken word in 2004 after watching Def Poetry Jam. In the summer of 2005 the opportunity presented itself for me to try music, my passion," Rapsody says. That was the summer she met her future Kooley High bandmates, who started out as co-founders of the N.C. State club H2O.
9th Wonder happened to come to one of the club's meetings to listen to their collection of solo tracks. Rapsody says of that meeting, "I thought to myself he was going to play me. But, he said I had a lot of potential and gave me a lot of advice about flow and how to lean back on the track."
After numerous homework assignments and hip hop training sessions, Rapsody honed her skills into an edge sharper than a knife.
Currently, she is working on a her first solo album, The Return of the B-girl, which will be succeded with a mixtape, "Prelude to Return of the B-Girl". Rapsody has made appearances on 9th Wonder's The Wonder Years, The Kooley High EP, Summer Sessions, and more recently on a Nike documentary celebrating 30 years of basketball, Nike Laced. "I want to make good music and be a role model to little girls, especially little black girls," she confirms
