An arts and spoken word inspired show brought to you by Laura and Tara: see that's where we got 'RARA' from: clever, eh?

About me:

Rara noun Definition:

1. U.K. short skirt: a short full skirt usually layered or with rows of frills, popular in the 1980s [A style originally worn by cheerleaders]

2. A form of festival music used for street processions, typically during Easter Week. Vodou is often implemented througout the procession. The music centers on a set of cylindrical bamboo trumpets called vaksen, but also features drums, maracas, güiros and metal bells, as well as cylindrical metal trumpets made from recycled metal (often coffee cans). Rara lyrics address difficult issues, such as political oppression or poverty. Consequently, rara groups and other musicians have been banned from performing and even forced into exile, most notably folk singer Manno Charlemagne who returned to Haïti in the 1990s and was elected mayor of Port-au-Prince.

3. A Spanky New Show on Subcity Radio, Tuesdays 11am-noon, live on 106.6 FM 20th February 'til March 22nd. GET.IN.VOLVED

TUNE UP – A CALL TO ARMS

JOIN THE TUNE UP INDUSTRY MAILING LIST TODAY!

We are looking for venues (including pubs, village halls, churches or galleries) and promoters who are active within their own area to join the Tune Up industry database.

Tune Up, the Scottish Arts Council scheme,  currently funds artists and musicians to tour to many outlying areas. We’d like to increase this and involve as many new promoters and venues as possible.  If you are a venue or a promoter who is interested in booking a Tune Up show for our 2009/2010 season, add your details to the industry mailing list and you’ll be contacted shortly.

To be included on the database for 2009/2010 season you need to join the mailing list with immediate effect.

PLEASE REPOST TO YOUR FRIENDS WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM JOINING THE LIST.

Thanks, love Tune Up x x

Hey LX - sorry about the album. It got caught up in the mailout madness. The 'international' box has been painfully neglected! We'll send it out....Yes - Sara Guindon did the artwork and her shirts can be seen on the backs of many people the world over (thepinpals. typepad. com). She is amazing! Take care!

I love the smell of napalm in the morning - or should that be toast - at the 5th birthday Pinups the Kitchen Bar ran out of vodka - so the staff just started serving gin...you have to love the logic...were you involved in that decision? (Except we all know drinking gin is dangerous cos its mad eform tiny baby tears and gives you DEPRESSION!)

This week's Beard radio presentation!

http://www2. subcity. org/cgi-bin/listen. m3u?beardradio-20081110-96k. mp3

To paraphrase Fontella Bass's scatalogical exclamation in tonight's first tune, this show is like a low fart that's music to your brain. In the best possible way.
We've got some hot jazz, existential art-song, Lettrist sound-poetry and a novel take on a Jewish melody. There's a Bollywood synth and steel guitar wigout and some tranced out excursions for organ and tape delay. We also celebrate Neil Young's loopy cinematic folly Human Highway by playing an awesome cut from his unfairly maligned electro-rock opus Trans and a rare, but super-catchy apocalyptic hoedown from Devo.
Enjoy!

Have you tried Koss Portapros? I managed to break my last pair, not by treading on them, but probably by pulling the chord too hard. Anyways, they're probably a bit too big to tread on, unless you leave 'em lying on the floor. They're fantastic headphones and they look proper early 80s retro.
Enjoy our horror fest.
I look forward to hearing Rara Radio!
