Rattray Head's Interests

| General | Wildlife
There is a wonderful array of wildlife and plantlife in and around Rattray Head. You will see hundreds of rabbits all around our home, thousands of wintering geese, a huge variety of birds, the occasional deer, badger, and fox, and the summer seal colony. There are even wild strawberries and orchids hidden in the marshy hollows of the dune system.
Beach and Dunes
We are located in the middle of 11 miles of glorious sandy beach and dunes. The beach is unknown outside this area and has only a handful of access points along the entire length. It is therefore very secluded, and when we walk the dogs we almost always have the beach to ourselves. It's marvellous!
RSPB Loch of Strathbeg
The nature reserve covers 2300 acres and contains the largest dune loch in Britain. An internationally important wetland and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the reserve is the winter home for tens of thousands of pink-footed geese and large numbers of whooper swans and ducks.
Coastguard
We don't know much about these cottages yet, so more research to do, but the ruins are on nearby high ground with wonderful views around the sandy bay.
Lighthouse
Built on rocks in the sea by David Alan Stevenson and made operational in 1895.
Wrecks
So far we have found four wrecks within one mile south of the lighthouse. Three are usually hidden under the beach, but the fourth is always visible except under the highest of tides.

About me:
Rattray Head offers a non-smoking dog-friendly eco-hostel, holiday apartment, and bed and breakfast in North East Scotland.
Our home is the most easterly hostel and rural B&B on mainland Scotland. The generally good weather makes this one of the driest, sunniest areas of Scotland and we are fortunate not to be affected by the dreaded Scottish midge. Vegetarian breakfasts are always available for our B&B guests.
The gentle countryside is ideal for cycling, walking, birdwatching, or romantic weekends or holidays. The secluded eleven mile sandy beach with its giant dunes has a summer seal colony and huge variety of birdlife. Attractions include the lighthouse, shipwrecks, seals, birds, nature reserve, ruins of 18th century fishing village and c13th century Chapel, chain of WWII pillboxes, in fact something for everybody.
