Bio
In the past year, The Raven and the Writing Desk have broken out in the Denver music scene like an urgent heartbeat. Blending the better elements of bands like The Arcade Fire and Mazzy Star, the band has brewed up a fresh new sound that rattles audiences out of their daze and leaves them craving more. Acknowledged for their gorgeous instrumental blend, The Raven and the Writing Desk are turning heads all over Denver with their classical twist on rock and their haunted and emotional live performances. The Raven and the Writing Desk formed in the Fall of 2009 after founders Julia LiBassi and Scott Conroy arrived in Denver with a plan to start a new band that would knock people off their feet. New to the city and with little contacts, the two prepared themselves for a lengthy trial period during which they could gather the perfect group of people. Much to their surprise, this happened almost instantaneously. In less than a year, The Raven and the Writing Desk moved audiences with beautiful energy-packed live performances, were accepted into Denver's UMS Festival, and recorded their debut album with Denver's grammy winning recording engineer John Macy. The Raven and the Writing Desk's music reverberates with imagination and theatricality. The group draws from classical influences in the creation of a sound that is dark, haunted, dreamy, and entirely their own. Lead singer/songwriter Julia LiBassi's commanding voice grips audiences with energy and emotion. The gorgeous swelling of Adrienne Short's violin twists in harmonious perfection with Scott Conroy's fluid guitar playing. The interplay between Ryan Self's masterful bass, Neil Mitchell's extraordinary percussion, and Matt Murphy's dynamic drums carries the music on a current of pounding rhythm. The Raven and the Writing Desk's first album "Recidivist" recorded at Macy Sound Studios in Denver, CO is due out October 11th. More of a concept album, the songs center around tragic characters who have fallen victim to their cyclical existences. Sleepwalkers, marionettes, crazed men and women, and astronauts severed from their craft and lost out in space encapsulate this dark and haunted world the band has captured in a snow globe for all the world to see.
