    RAVING MAES
The Raving Maes - womens morris dance group based in East Yorkshire. Our members range from ages 13 to 60+. Children of the Raving Maes dance as well - they are the Mini Maes.

Many of our dances are traditional and some are 'home made' but all are delivered with a bit of Maes gusto and twist!!.

We first met in February 2007 born from an idea had at a Yule Feast the previous December, about a womens dance group forming. We met two months later in a barn (in the deepest depths of the East Riding)...and have never looked back since - dancing and evolving ever on.

WASSAIL JANUARY 2009:
The weather was kind for us this January when we danced at the Pickering Community Orchard's 2009 Wassail in Hull. It was the second Wassail they have had - BBC Look North even filmed it!!

..

.. OUR DANCES AND TUNES:

Cheeky Broom Dance - Homegrown dance for 6 or 12 dancers with broomsticks.

Tune: Jacky Tar

Constant Billy - Traditional Morris dance with sticks.

Tune: Constant Billy

Jenny Plucks Pears - Playford Dance, no sticks.

Tune: Jenny Plucks Pears

Banging Tabatha - Border Morris dance devised by our very own Squiress Tabatha Mae, with orginal music by John New.

Tune: Wheel of the year

Never Big Enough - Broomstick dance - this dance just gets bigger and bigger!

Tune: Sportman's Hornpipe

Molly Broom - Broomstick dance for 8 dancers. We saw Rattlejag Morris dance this in Doncaster 2009 and they kindly gave us the dance steps.

Tune: Congress to Laceby

Mandi's Stomp - Homegrown by Mandi Mae this started life as a dance without sticks to the tune Gallopede, but it was just missing a little something...

- so sticks were added, now it is complete.

Tune: Mandi's Stomp by Sally Twiswick (aka Jill Fisher)

Mini Mae Fairy Dance - Our own Mini Maes made this dance up this year,

great for under 16 years olds.

Who says Morris is dying!.

Tune: Fairy Dance

INSTRUMENTS: We can have up to 12 musicians playing with a vast array of instruments... melodeons, accordion, whistles, fiddles, guitar, drum, udo and the all important washboard complete with bicycle bell - the business!

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace...
    Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
    (see my blog for details):
    CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

    As gospellers have said,
    Beneath signalling skies,
    On land dusty to tread,
    A trough in a stable
    Was the strawy first-bed
    Of a divine baby -
    The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
    There then and here now;
    The yuletide of goodwill -
    There then and here now.

    In respect of this chance,
    Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
    Attending Christ's churches
    And trying to enhance,
    With singing and ritual,
    Our God-loving stance.

    A...

Another cold dance-out last weekend. When are we going to do one in the warm sunshine? It was great fun dancing with the Rattlejag 'boys' again.

We are continuing to get better and better, and the compliments - and quirky remarks - just keep on coming! keep it going girls ;-) Maebea
