THE OPTIMIST'S CREED
Promise Yourself
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature you meet.
To give so much time to improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud word, but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side, so long as you are true to the best that is in you.
Rory Campbell (aka Rawz) moved to Oxford in 1987 at the age of 3. From a young age Rory showed an interest in rhythm and word play (even reading a poem on BBC Radio Oxford after winning a school poetry competition!). He started making his own hip hop beats on Playstation 1 game 'Music' and started writing rap lyrics around the age of 16. In late 2005 he was a founding member (alongside Bubz, Danger One and A-Star) of new Oxford hip hop collective 'The G Block Family'. After featuring on the first couple of CDs, Rawz decided to expand his musical knowledge and attended a Sound Engineering course at Blackbird Leys' Soundworks Studio with Bubz. After achieving the qualification at the highest level (top of the class!) he felt more confident to start afresh making his own beats. G Block continued to release CDs and began to gain a reputation as Oxford’s most productive unit with each release highly anticipated by fans. In 2008 Rawz attended a ‘Performance, Poetry and Story Telling’ course run by International Slam Poetry Champion Steve Larkin, and a PTTLS teacher training course accredited by City and Guilds, with G Block Family members Black Knight and N-Zyme. Their view was to enriching their own knowledge and to start running programs for people wanting to expand their knowledge in the field of creating modern urban music. This led to work with the ‘Leys CDI Youth Project’ including a regular ‘Positive Lyrics’ workshop aimed at 9-14 year olds and the ‘Knife or Life’ anti knife crime conference at Oxford United’s Kassam Stadium. Rawz has appeared in the Oxford Mail on numerous occasions and has played at number of live events alongside The G Block Family including Oxford’s O2 Academy and Cowley Carnivals and Birmingham’s Cheese Factory, even supporting UK Hip Hop legend Skinnyman at a local event. Rawz is still working with The G Block Family on the release of new material and is about to start recording a solo album featuring 22 tracks. He is also still working with Black Knight alongside Steve Larkin in delivering the same ‘Performance, Poetry and Story Telling’ course he participated in last year. The pair are also developing their own project for delivery in the near future.
