Named after an android from the original Star Trek series, Rayna is anything but robotic, and her music is a candid reflection of this. Fueled by life experience, her powerful, introspective lyrics speak of pride, love, change and loss and keep her humanoid audiences enthralled and connected. Fluid, stirring melodies and a deep vocal range make for a sound that is passionate and strong, yet distinctly feminine.
In 2004, after years of playing the Toronto scene as a background vocalist, Rayna decided to step into the forefront and take the evolutionary step of creating her own music. In a recent interview with YYZ Lifestyle Magazine she says, "I thought it would be fun to learn guitar, but had no intention of writing my own songs. I wanted to learn a few chords, so I picked up a guitar and taught myself...Poetry had always been a passion of mine so I tried putting some of my poems into songs. It wasn't until a few attempts that I realized that I could actually write my own music."
Naturally, she followed the prime directive and completed her immediate mission of ..ing her work by recording a three-song demo. Originally intended as pre-production for her recently released Empty Room CD, the recordings unexpectedly caught the ears of the 2005 Toronto Independent Music Awards and earned her a nomination in the "Best Female Acoustic" category. But the attention didn't stop there. Having established a high internet profile, Rayna's music has attracted attention and support locally from broadcasters by being featured on XM Satellite Radio, IndieCan Radio and globally from numerous podcasters.
Empty Room brings Rayna's music to life with the full instrumentations already implicit in her music. "I've always heard so much more than just acoustic guitar and vocals in my songs. It's very exciting to see this concept come into fruition." Her debut release is currently available worldwide through her official website www.rayna.ca, HMV.com and iTunes.
