Barbara Cloyd moved to Nashville to pursue a career as a songwriter and she hit the top of the charts with the Lorrie Morgan single “I Guess You Had To Be There.”
She has booked shows for many years at The Bluebird Café, Nashville’s premier showcase club. The open mic she continues to host on Mondays has seen newcomers like Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Dierks Bentley and David Wilcox.
Her ability to spot talent is well known in the music industry and her introductions have opened doors for writers like Marcel (Nothing to Lose, artist on Lyric Street), Barry Dean (God’s Will), Anthony Smith (Run) and Brett Jones (Little Past Little Rock).
She has been teaching songwriting since 1999 and several of her workshop alumni are now signed as staff writers for Nashville publishing companies.
She continues to perform in Nashville and on the road and has released two independent CD’s of her own music.
Hi – My name is Barbara Cloyd. I am a Nashville songwriter, best known for the Lorrie Morgan hit “I Guess You Had To Be There.” (See our “band member” section for more about me.)
My service, READY FOR THE ROW, is for songwriters whose goal is to get songs recorded in the major label Country market, either as artists or writers. I want to help you write great songs, get excellent guitar/vocal demos of them and get heard. The best way to find out about what I do is to visit www.barbaracloyd.com, but here is a summary:
CRITIQUES AND CONSULTATION: I can listen to your songs and give in-depth feedback on their craft and commercial potential. I can answer questions about the Nashville music business and help you devise strategies for your own career. For critiques the fee is $30 per song. Consultation is $60 per hour.
PLAY FOR PUBLISHER WORKSHOPS: a year I host a Play For Publishers workshop here in Nashville. Any writer with a desire to write for the commercial Country market is invited to apply. Fifteen are selected to attend the event, which runs Thursday through Saturday. Six established, successful publishers attend and, in front of the group, listen to a song from each writer and give feedback. There is also an intensive class in the elements of commercial songwriting, a show with hit songwriters at the Bluebird Café and a chance to perform at a Nashville writers night. The application fee is $10 and for those selected the fee is $275. (Financial assistance available.) If you are a “Ready for the Row” friend you will receive notice whenever one is scheduled or you can send an email to Barbara@barbaracloyd.com with “workshops mailing list” in the subject line
