From the amalgamation of the old school, peculiar characters, balanced styles and fresh color combinations, a unique writer has appeared on the international graffiti scene. In addition, he is the planner, creative mind and director of the huge wall productions of the Montana Writer Team (in close collaboration with a friend and team mate ATOM).
A short note about his development/career:
CANTWO, born in Germany began break-dancing and graffiti writing in the early 1980s. You knew who painted what name in your city and in other locations. Back then, it wasn't a problem to mention your illegal name.
At an early age, by attending jam sessions, he got to know a lot of people who are still active today (e.g. 1986: JASE, SWIFT, SHARK; 1987: LOOMIT, CEMNOZ, NEON, SKENA; 1988: CHINTZ, DARCO, GAWKI, etc.). These are just samplings; the list is endless.
His work lost momentum in the late 80s but experienced resurgence in 1992 following his relocation to Hamburg, where he found new legal areas, a new territory, new contacts and new inspiration.
“I then started painting a lot, but I never envisioned being invited to the other side of the globe on the basis of my fame a mere nine years later. All I was interested in was painting my pieces at the time,” CANTWO says.
That CANTWO has gained so much fame may be attributed to the fact that he paints both characters and styles. Many writers specialize in one or the other. It took CANTWO several years to develop his own unique style. Particularly when starting out, many writers want to achieve far too much far too fast, and if they don’t make it, they give up or start copying the pictures of others out of frustration and envy.
“Basically I want to emphasise again that graffiti is not graffiti. For me graffiti or writing is part of the HipHop culture, and developed about the same time as break dancing (b-boying), rap and DJing in the early 1970s in New York.” Writing (as the name says) is about writing your name or pseudonym. It doesn’t matter how you do it or where or with what. The main thing is to become known in the scene.
One of the latest projects of CANTWO is called “Absolute Graffiti”. Together with his long-standing friends ATOM, BOMBER and ZEBSTER it is a fusion of extremely talented and specialised people in the area of graffiti who see themselves not only as agents but more as a working group and service provider.
