Called “angry and groovy at the same time” by legendary DJ Gene Shay, Real West is what happens when three friends raised in the 1970s on a diet of syndicated 60s pop culture and cold war paranoia discover cool jazz, Johnny Cash and a social conscience. A touch of Burt Bacharach is the sweet dollop atop their "acoustic jazzabilly" sound.
Based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Real West was formed by Mark Graham (vocals, guitar) and Brandon Kwiatek (bass) in 2001. Jason Kelsey (piano) came on board in 2008. The band has been invited to play at the Summer 2004 Antifolk Festival in New York City, RiverFusion 2006/07 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the 2006/07 SouthSide Film Festival (Bethlehem) and the Allentown Art Museum (2006); Gene Shay’s Folk Show (WXPN Philadelphia) and the Acoustic Philly Festival (2007). Performances in 2008-09 include those at the Banana Factory (Bethlehem), Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival, PPL Plaza Summer Concert Series and Connexions Galley (Easton).
Real West’s debut CD, War is a Wonderful Thing (2005), has received national and international airplay. With their newest songs, some of which are above, the trio find themselves in a more mellow and expansive mood.
“Real West create a savvy folk sound interjected with rockabilly, punk and beat influences. But it’s the straightforward lyrics that will stop listeners in their tracks.” The Morning Call
“The Real West sound is an All-American mix of Johnny Cash, 1950s rockabilly, Love, Vince Guaraldi, the Doors, and the Stooges.” Intelligent Noise
“There are hints of Morrisey and Cash here, but this is truly original – listen to these guys.”
Pulse Weekly
“Pop sophistication with the barest of instrumentation.” Ein Opfer der Gesellschaft
