CD REVIEWS
THE SAME THING (Darrell Katz/JCA Orchestra, Cadence Records) "Shrimpton's performances here are brilliant, demonstrating acting ability in tandem with a gorgeously mellow voice." --Marc Medwin, Cadence Magazine
A "supple and often surprising vocalist..." --Michael G. Nastos, AllMusic.com
“Splendid…nearly perfect control and truly expressive depth.” —Maurizio Comandini, All About Jazz Italia
MADMAN'S MOON (Shrimpton/Hofbauer, CNM Records)
"...A commanding debut. Shrimpton and guitarist Eric Hofbauer make a tight-knit team. Precise, flexible, and alluring, [Rebecca's] voice raptures, but she doesn't overplay the sensuality note. Shrimpton's sensuality is fully embedded in her vocal technique and in her mastery of the art of singing (highlighted words and phrasings, marvelously controlled leaps, perfect pronunciation). One last point in favor of this duos debut album: the repertoire. No obvious choices...[and Shrimpton's] two originals fit in remarkably well, especially the Porter-like 'I'm in a Mood.'" --François Couture, All Music Guide
MADMAN'S MOON (Shrimpton/Hofbauer, CNM Records)
"The American songbook is given a new facelift on Madman's Moon with jazz guitar and avant garde vocals... Shrimpton is a simply exquisite vocalist whose alto is endowed with richness, clarity, and eclecticism. Her crystal vocalizations are perfectly matched with Hofbauer's detailed string work.... They give new spins on familiar and unfamiliar songs, taking the freedom to try different approaches to the standard jazz vocal songbook. The duo and guests are to be commended for their performances and their willingness to think outside of the proverbial jazz vocal box." --Mark F. Turner, All About Jazz
IN, THRU & OUT (Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, Cadence Records)
"Rebecca Shrimpton's voice...lingers in the memory. She enhances the harmonies of Argentinean-born composer Laura Andel's lovely "El Tiempo--To My Mother," while her rich tones endow Darrell Katz' "The Red Blues" with a hefty significance. Is it just me or is there something of Jo Stafford and Jeri Southern in there?" --Duncan Heining, Britain's Jazzwise magazine
THE DEATH OF SIMONE WEIL (Darrell Katz/JCA Orchestra, Innova Records)
"The alto voice of Rebecca Shrimpton effortlessly captures the subtle shadings of the starkly beautiful text. Bostons powerfully virtuosic Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra accompanies with fistfuls of fire. "The Death of Simone Weil" stands out in the jazz vocal tradition in terms of both scale and ambition. All in all, it's an exciting soirée with the far-out, the insane, and the beautifully strange." --Amazon Editorial Review
THE DEATH OF SIMONE WEIL (Darrell Katz/JCA Orchestra, Innova Records)
"Rebecca's performances are quite compelling; stylistically, her contributions to this disc bring to mind Judi Silvano, Ann Dyer, and Kitty Brazelton (three of the more imaginative vocalists of the '90s and 2000s). Favoring an inside/outside approach, this CD underscores the fact that not all avant-garde jazz is atonal screaming; actually, the disc is quite musical.... All of the pieces fit together nicely: Tatarunis' words, Katz' melodies and arrangements, the orchestra's musicianship, and Shrimpton's expressive vocals make for an attractive, successful combination." --Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
THE SAME THING (Darrell Katz/JCA Orchestra, Cadence Records) "All the Darrell Katz/JCA hallmarks are here: roiling expressionistic canvases, full of dramatic dynamic and textural contrasts; brawling virtuoso horn solos; free-collective outbursts; chugging rhythms; beautifully calibrated ensembles...with JCA mainstay Rebecca Shrimpton vocalizing expertly." --Jon Garelick, Boston Phoenix
“REBECCA SHRIMPTON IS A SIMPLY EXQUISITE VOCALIST” —Mark F. Turner, All About Jazz
“PRECISE, FLEXIBLE, AND ALLURING, HER VOICE RAPTURES” —Francois Couture, All Music Guide
Jazz vocalist Rebecca Shrimpton is acclaimed for her rare melding of a sumptuous and agile voice with an eclectic approach that eschews the obvious. Her CD, MADMAN'S MOON, with guitarist Eric Hofbauer, garnered international critical praise, earning a four-star review from the All Music Guide and making two Top Ten CDs of 2005 lists (Jazz Times Magazine and CHUO FM).
Rebecca has two new CDs out: REQUITED features new songs by internationally best-selling novelist Anita Diamant (The Red Tent) and pianist Bert Seager. THE SAME THING is her fourth CD with composer Darrell Katz and the Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, and features blues legend Mike Finnigan (from Jimi Hendrix' Electric Ladyland). (She's just finished recording a fifth CD with Darrell Katz and the JCA, with a return visit by Mike Finnigan.)
Rebecca has appeared with Joe Lovano, Steve Lacy, Oliver Lake, George Russell, Ran Blake, and George Lewis, and has been the vocalist for Boston’s 18-piece Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra for the past ten years.
Gaining a reputation as a composer’s singer, Rebecca has performed new works with Darrell Katz, Laura Andel, Daniel Felsenfeld, among others, as well as her own compositions, one of which debuted with luminary bassist Cecil McBee and singer Roberta Gambarini. Performance venues include Manhattan’s Cornelia Street Café and Boston’s Regattabar, Ryles Jazz Club, The Beehive, Jordan Hall, and Berklee Performance Center. She was also featured on two PBS/NPR concert broadcasts and recordings, performing alongside singer/actor Theodore Bikel.
She has CDs on Rounder, Cadence, Red Toucan, Innova, Invisible Music, and Creative Nation Music (CNM) Records.
Rebecca is also an accomplished voice teacher, with extensive training and performance as both a classical mezzo soprano and a jazz vocalist. She has a master's degree in jazz studies from New England Conservatory, where she studied with Dominique Eade and John McNeil, and where she now teaches. As a vocal instructor, she embraces jazz, modern classical, blues, R&B, gospel, folk, country, and pop while providing expert instruction in healthful vocal technique, improvisation, development of individual sound/style, repertoire, theory and eartraining.

Thank you much for adding me! I'm very impressed by you and your music. Wished I had only 10% of your vocal discipline and elegance. But I'm just a dirty old Blues man ... Pete of TaTanTrain
Thanks for the add. Glad I 'discovered' you on myspace. Only an exceptional vocalist would record these tunes this way. Really gorgeous Small Day Tomorrow. All the best.
