Becca's Interests
|
| General | Medicine, camping, reading anything I can get my hands on, EMS, volunteering, science, my cats, gardening, cooking, remodeling my kitchen, old rustic furniture, classic rock, oboe music, skinny dipping, fire spinning, trees, jewelry making and wire work, designing celtic knotwork art, anything Italian, traveling, traveling, traveling, being with friends, Shiatsu, Chinese medicine, calligraphy, occasionally writing poetry, hummingbirds, and a recent obsession with Spider solitaire. | | Music | I like way too many things, and have far too eclectic tastes to list here. Why? I hate typing out lists. I used to play the oboe in symphony, plus I like just about everything from the 60s and 70s. I don't like country, as a rule, but Willie Nelson is my favorite artist. Go figure. | | Movies | Again, eclectic tastes. Movies are to entertain you, make you think, give you a two hour escape, evoke an emotion.... I'm NOT a film snob. If you can entertain me for about two hours, you can get my money at the box office. If you can make me laugh or broaden my horizons while you're at it, kudos. My favorite movies? Don't laugh..... it's shallow. 'Babe' and 'The Life Aquatic'. Probably because there's no roller coaster ups and downs. Just a nice smooth ride through a little bit of surreal-ness. (Is that even a word?) | | Television | I don't watch much TV, but I like the background noise when I'm home alone. Hundreds of channels, rarely anything on. My favorites? Right now, my favorite show is House; until it went off the air it was The West Wing. I also like Law & Order, CSI, Gone Without a Trace, The Simpsons, South Park, and The Family Guy. I HATE anything that could be classified as 'reality TV'. I see enough people being pricks when I leave my house. | | Books | Book I'm reading now: The Progress Paradox - awesome for sociology geekoids like me.
I like sci-fi (not so much fantasy) and mystery when I'm reading fiction. Non-fiction stuff on history and medicine is good. Frankly, I love all decently-written books, and our house is overflowing with them, since neither John nor I can bear to get rid of any book that falls into our hands. In fact, I collect old books. When I'm tight financially, I have to put myself on book probation. I couldn't name my favorite book if I tried. But, if you haven't read Good Omens, do yourself a favor and read it. Now. Why are you still looking at this profile?!? Go get a copy of Good Omens! | | Heroes | Heroes are ordinary people who, at the most important moments, do extraordinary things.
My partner John. Paramedic extraordinaire for about 25 years now. My grandfather. His plane is in the Smithsonian, and he helped start the atomic veteran's association. Eugenie Clark and Jacques Cousteau - pioneers and geniuses. If you're ever in Monaco, drop by the Cousteau Aquarium. Fantabulous. |

About me:
Med school rules my life most of the time - I'm pretty sure I used to be cool....
I'm big into social responsiblity and volunteering.
I keep up my EMT-I even though I'm a med student, and always will.
My partner John, his kids and their kids, and our huge extended 'family of choice' take priority and pride of place in the ever shrinking teacup of free time I'm left with after studying takes its toll. Everyone is in Austin, and I'm stuck in Galveston during the week (and more around test time).
I'm really attached to my cats, Merlin, Gaia and Gozer.
I find comfort and peace in our house with its covered porches and huge wild yard.
A perfect day has snoring cats curled up on my lap, a few tough sudoku puzzles or that new book I've been waiting for, good coffee, listening to John putter around the house, and meeting old friends for a quiet dinner.

Who I'd like to meet:
Well, just about anybody, I guess. Saying you'd want to meet people of a certain category kinda cuts you off from all sorts of opportunities, don't ya know?
The universe has been known to throw things at you wrapped in the most surprising packages.
