It seems like everyone is trying to ‘find themselves’ these days. The movies are full of these stories- full of wanderers and travelers searching for something that makes them tick. I might count myself among these folks if it wasn’t so cliché. Well, I might be cliché.
I have realized on my journey that I’ve never been good at doing things that you’re told you’re supposed to do when you grow up. You’re supposed to be sensible, to be rich, to have 2.5 kids and a house in the suburbs. You’re supposed to have the right friends and pick a sensible career. Okay, I don’t fit the mold. I wear impractical shoes. I may never be rich and famous. But if I was a bum, I’d still have to write music. That is the only way I can find the way to say things I could never say out loud otherwise. It has been said that a song is expressing something that cannot merely be said in words. I would have to agree.
Music is profound. There are times that you remember vividly with a song. Your first love, a warm drive on a summer night, visiting New York for the first time, all with their own soundtrack. These are the enduring moments of our lives that we hang on to, that we revert back to when we drive down the street to the house we grew up in.
People say to me, ‘so you wanna be a rock star?’ Well, I do. But it’s not for the glamour. My life isn’t all shiny and painted. I work a ‘day job’ waiting tables sometimes. I drive a beat-up Saturn. My relationships are far from perfect. I like red wine, perhaps too much. But from these things, these imperfect and complicated daily things come words that work themselves onto a page, and then find a melody, and begin bursting out of my guitar and piano. And then, I open my voice and give them to you.
And now our paths have intersected, and I give you my songs to take along on your journey, to make new memories with, to share. Thank you for listening.
