Heroes
"I can remember
Standing, by the wall
And the guns shot above our heads
And we kissed,
as though nothing could fall
And the shame was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be Heroes,
just for one day"

About me: Linda Dawn Hammond, Photographer and journalist. <>
I (Linda Dawn Hammond) was a participant/observer and photographer of the punk scene in Toronto, Montreal & NYC, throughout the late 70s/80s and well into the '90s. Following that, well, what is punk now. at least by my definition. I moved to Montreal in '82 and still consider it home, though since 2 years I live elsewhere. My alter ego was/is Dawn One, a name created for a comic zine I contributed to in '83, then became affixed to punk jewellery I was selling in the lower East side of NYC . I eventually decided that perhaps Post Punk was a more appropriate label to aspire to, rather than end up like those old hippies who just won't go away. Nevertheless, my politics (decidedly LEFT) and general attitude (those who knew, know!) remains relatively unchanged since my punk days. Though I'm probably easier to deal with now- less ego and less hyper.
My Quebec Summit series was on exhibit in Montreal at the Art + Anarchy Montreal in May, 2007. One of the photos is in a new book of poetry by Norman Nawrocki (see friends) and are in the slide show on this site.
Who I'd like to meet: I'd love to photograph Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Brian Eno AND John Lydon - !!!!! I somehow missed them back in the day and they're an integral part of the music scene I documented.
I'd like to go back to the days when it wasn't all so restricted, getting backstage access and shooting entire sets.
My music photography can be found on my sites at www.IndyFoto.com and www.Rebelrebelle.com . The latter is my retrospective, Punks and Provocateurs, and contains over 250 photos plus text from '76-present. My CV is at www.DawnOne.com
There are also photos on my FLICKR site at :

On Saturday June 16 come celebrate 50 years of Handsome Ned.
Handsome Ned Masyk (1957-87) was the Godfather of Toronto's Honky Tonk/Rockabilly/Cow-Punk scene in the 1980's.
Known for his strong tenor voice, songwriting chops, larger-than-life personality and tireless promotion, Ned established a residency at the Cameron House which attracted a mix of hayseeds, urban cowboys, rockabillies, drunks, punks, bikers, truckers and college students building a crossover audience for the scene. He also hosted the radio show "Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor" on CKLN 88.1fm where he played a mixture of vintage and modern as well as giving the first local airplay to the likes of Blue Rodeo, Lori Yates, Ray Condo, Bop Cats, Stray Cats, Rank & File, Blasters, & REM.
Ned did few recordings before his death in Dec. 1987, but a posthumous ‘best of’ was released in 1989 by Virgin Canada to rave reviews and it received a Juno nomination. In 2000, a double CD anthology, "The Name is Ned", was released by EMI to further acclaim and is now sold out of print.
To celebrate Ned's 50th birthday in June 2007, there will be a music tribute night at the Horseshoe Club in Toronto featuring performances by a cast of thousands including: Steve Koch, John Borra, Cleave Anderson, Johnny Macleod, Jim Masyk, Steve Leckie, Screamin' Sam, Greg Keelor, Bruce Good, Tony Kenny (of the Razorbacks), Teddy Fury, Lori Yates, Emily Weedon, Heather Morgan, Michael Brennon, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Scott B, Joanne Mackell & some surprise guests.
The night will also feature the re-release of "the Name is Ned" CD, as well as a preview of the upcoming Handsome Ned
