Aux alentours de 1850, dans les rues de Smyrne, Asie mineure, dans les quartiers populaires d'Istanbul, les recoins du port de Syros, dans les classes ouvrières d'Athènes, du Pirée et de Thessalonique, les musiciens s'adonnent à leurs notes. Quelques années plus tard, la rencontre entre les réfugiés grecs d'Asie mineure et les grecs natifs fera naître l'ébauche d'une nouvelle musique qui deviendra Le rebetiko. D'une part, les musiciens de Smyrne et des autres villes anatoliennes, qui étaient extrêmement sophistiqués et qui avaient comme seul bagage leur haute éducation musicale. De l'autre, les joueurs de bouzouki des tékés (la fumerie clandestine de haschisch) du Pirée qui accompagnaient des chanteurs à la voix rauque et profonde. Le rebetiko reflète la tradition modale qui vient de l'orient, mais il incorpore également des éléments de la chanson populaire grecque.
Pour raconter le rebetiko, le Dromos permet de créer un climat affectif particulier et facilite l'expression de certains sentiments. Husseini, Hijaz, Piraïotiko, Uzak, Karip... In and around the 1850..s, in the streets of Smyrna, Asia Minor, the busy neighbourhoods of Istanbul, the corners of the port of Syros, in the working classes of Athens, Piraeus and Salonika, devoted instrumentalists were budding. A few years later, the coming together of the Greek refugees from Asia Minor and the native Greeks gave birth to a novel musical style which eventually became known as rebetiko. On the one hand were the musicians from Smyrna and other cities from Asia Minor, which were extremely sophisticated and which had their superior musical education to boast about. On the other were the bouzouki players of Piraeus accompanying the often hoarse and deep- voiced singers of the teke (clandestine hash dens). Rebetiko reflects the modal tradition that comes from the east, but equally incorporates elements of popular Greek music.
In order to tell the story of rebetiko, the Dromos allows the creation of a particular emotional atmosphere and facilitates the expression of certain feelings.
