Rebsie Fairholm vocals, 12-string guitar, celtic harp and a few other bits. Dick Langford guitars and an assortment of other instruments, real and imagined.
My debut album features the talents of Martyn Kember-Smith (Komrade K), Steve Lang, William Shaw, Jason Gazda, Phideaux Xavier and Steafan Hannigan.
Influences
Singers who have inspired me include Kate Bush, Sandy Denny, Julianne Regan, Jeff Buckley, Kirsty MacColl, Jacqui McShee, Lal Waterson, Anne Briggs, Celia Humphris and Shirley Collins. I love Trees, Circulus, Jethro Tull, Malicorne, David Bowie, Jah Wobble, early Steeleye Span, Eliza Carthy and Phideaux.
I sing mostly dark and soulful songs, generally involving ghosts or dead people, though that isn't a conscious policy decision.
I also play various instruments including 12-string guitar, celtic harp, keyboards, bass and occasionally mandolin.
My debut album Mind The Gap was released in August 2007, featuring special guest appearances by Phideaux and Steafan Hannigan.

I've dipped heavily into the well of ancestral and faery inspiration with my arrangements of British trad songs and I also write songs of my own which are rooted in tradition but branch out into something else. I tend towards the dark and ethereal side of folk music with a slightly psychedelic edge.
About the songs: The first three are brand new and will be going on my second album. I'm very proud to present Dick Langford's stunning arrangement of the Lyke Wake Dirge, while Our Captain Cried is another traditional song in a very different vein. The Cursing Song was written in 1975 by R J Stewart (recorded with permission). The other two songs are from my debut album Mind The Gap. Round Window is one of my own songs loosely about the first world war, while Blackbirds and Thrushes is a bit of English traddy psychedelia. Hope you like 'em!
I don't strive for perfection in my music ... I take the music into my soul and then let it all splurge out however it wants.
On a completely unrelated note, I'm an expert on heritage vegetables and plant breeding, so if you've ever wondered how to hand-pollinate tomatoes or grow weird-coloured peas feel free to check out my Daughter of the Soil site.

Cheesy Gareths last official gig with the Smirkins I hope you can all make it down to the fanastic Wheaton Aston festival, Saturday after the next.
Due to circumstances listed on my recent blog I can be sure that this gig will definatly be my very very last gig with the Smirkins, a band I worked hard to get this, and many other fine gigs, performing live over 100 times together, recorded a few fantastic demos and gaining huge amounts of friends on their myspace place which I set up with Tim Parkes for the band. I really wish the band the very best for the future and am sure that I will occasionally jam with some of the performers of the band on projects outside the band but for me, thats it Im announcing this myself as definatly the last Smirkins gig with Cheesy Gareth on guitar.
If your a musician with a heart for treachery, there is a vacancy for a guitarist or other instrument multi instrumentalist that will need to be filled by July
Meanwhile, back in the Garage......... Im now looking for other musicians locally for a fun folkish frolics around the local folk and pubs and festival circuit, Also Im setting up a singers/ songwriting evening in a nearby local pub, if your Gloucestershire based or further afield but fancy the craick then by all means contact me and Ill book you in for a set, have a jam together or whatever best regards, Cheesy

Music has always been a place where anything is possible - a refuge, a magical world where anyone can go, all kinds of people can come together, and anything can happen. We are limited only by our imagination. I believe that what we do and learn inside the world of music can affect what goes on in the world in a big, positive way. music is so important - like food and water. There are so many possibilities, and many doors yet to be opened. (Bill Frisell)
