Eclectic. Some songs were soft, picky and melancholy, some were space rock, others were just a voice accompanied by a string quartet. Still others were jazzy, breezy, piano fueled showsongs.
Reclinerland IS the musical musings of Michael Johnson, a singer songwriter who MAKES Postmodern Pop, or Pop Art Music.
Reclinerland has released five albums and toured in Portland, London, and all over the US, sharing bills with many talented people, including The Red House Painters, Kristen Hirsh, Pete Krebs, Modern English, the cute guy from Tears For Fears, Komeda, Ivy, Brenda Kahn, Joseph Arthur, Dreams Come True (a Japanese Pop band), Audio Learning Center, Damien Rice, The Decemberists, Norfolk & Western, The Stratford 4, the Pale, Corrine Bailey Rae, and others. Reclinerland appeared at festivals such as CMJ, SxSW, and Sasquatch. In April 2000, Reclinerland appeared on national television on Jimmy & Doug's Farm Club TV show on the USA network.
Journalist-types have singled out certain influences when describing Reclinerland's sound. Among them The Beatles, The Zombies, Galaxie 500, Nick Drake, Paul Simon, The Push Kings, and The Magnetic Fields. With the release of The Ideal Home Music Library, Reclinerland's fourth record, Mike added Cole Porter, Franklin Bruno, Chet Baker, Burt Bacharach, and Rogers & Hammerstien to that list.
Mike also played rhodes piano and sang in Blanket Music, founded and wrote songs for Parks & Recreation, and played various instruments in Super XX Man. He has branched out in recent years and is currently working on a stage musical.
This year, 2009, Reclinerland has plans to release two new albums. One, the Ideal Home Music Library, Volume 2, has already been made available to the public in an unmastered format and is can be obtained free at this link: http://www.reclinerlandhq.com/blog.html. The other, Secret Notebook, an album of songs based on stories by Kevin Sampsell, will be out later this year to coincide with the release of Mr. Sampsell's book.
Reclinerland is also working on a third self-titled album, also to be released later this year.
