Other than dealing with the crises besetting the planet: Writing; reading; drawing; 3-D films; simulator rides; air hockey; theme parks (although, I haven't been to one in some time. I think they're obscenely overpriced--and Disneyland is criminally negligent re: safety. Also, the more I learn about Orange County, the less inclined I am to spend money there); sports (e,g., arm wrestling with women, miniature golf); thrill rides (which I usually do alone).

MusicThe sound of motorists honking at peace demonstrations.

I'll watch any music video as long as Beavis & Butt-head are commenting on it. (I tend to watch these by myself.)

Interesting...

I wish I heard this as a child (yet, despite the b.s. I was fed about Custer in sixth grade, I sensed something wrong about him).

MoviesA few of my favorite movies (in no particular order) are: Ecological Design: Inventing the Future (documentary); Killer Klowns From Outer Space; Dreamchild; Fail Safe (the original); The Spirit of '76; The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao; The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T; Labyrinth; The Revolution Will Not Be Televised; Arsenal of Hypocrisy; Alcatraz Is Not an Island; The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original); Serial Mom; Polyester; Innerspace...

IMO, this movie is very good to see during the Thankstaking season. Netflix has it. Here are a few scenes--but you should see the whole movie:

TelevisionI usually use my TV for watching movie rentals. Last year someone recorded the documentary Life After People off cable for me. I love watching it. I don't necessarily think people should become entirely extinct, but I hope we choose to reduce our numbers substantially (and thus, in my scenario, nature would reclaim many of today's cities). Kick-ass preview here!

I see that National Geographic has done a similar show. Looks great!

I have about 35 hours of Beavis & Butt-Head episodes on tape (which I usually watch alone).

BooksAUDIO:Family of "Wizard of Oz" Creator Apologizes for His Calls for Indian Genocide (more in my photo album "Baum Editorials" and in my blog archive: August 9, 2007)

ECOTOPIA by Ernest Callenbach. Appalled by the environmental, economic, and foreign policies of the United States, Oregon, Washington, and Central and Northern California have broken away from the union and formed a new country: Ecotopia. The capital is San Francisco, where rivers once paved over, have been reclaimed and flow through the city. Renewable energy is ubiquitous. Cars are banned--instead, people get around on bicycles, horses, and electric buses. Because the communities are localized, people usually don't have to travel far. But when long commutes are necessary, Ecotopians can take mag-lev trains or electric buses, which have exclusive use of what's left of the freeways. Life in Ecotopia is simpler and more community-oriented. Although Callenbach wrote the book over 30 years ago (and set it in 1999), many of his ideas remain current. Ecotopians publish their own books through a venue similar to the internet. (And when readers print the books out, they have the option of printing them with permanent or temporary ink. The latter would allow the paper to be recycled.) Native Americans have their own societies and are free to live their traditional ways. I just finished reading Ecotopia Emerging, a prequel, which explains how this society came to be. The book is very topical and inspiring. ----------------------ISLAND by Aldous Huxley. In A Brave New World, Huxley depicted both modern and "primitive" societies with skepticism (I seem to disagree with his definition of "primitive"). In Island, he endeavored to present a viable third alternative: Pala, an island in SE Asia, whose inhabitants live relatively simple lives but also embrace science, education, and some technology. The society was cofounded by an atheist doctor from the west and a Buddhist native of Pala. The founders were determined to avoid the problems of western society. Children are tested at an early age to determine whether they have the potential to become "stong men" (a la Joseph Stalin) or "Peter Pans" (a la Hitler). If they are at-risk, they are given medication and psychological treatment. Child-rearing is significantly different; it is similar to the African idea that "it takes a village to raise a child." Children routinely spend time living with families unrelated to them. Thus, both the children and their biological parents get "vacations" from each other. Sex is revered in this society. Tantric sex is practiced, and teenagers are trained individually by sex instructors. Palanese take mushrooms regularly, which gives them glimpses of reality that they can take back to their daily existence. Unfortunately, various countries would like to see a regime change in Pala--a regime that would give the outsiders access to Pala's natural resources.--------------WALT DISNEY AND THE QUEST FOR COMMUNITY by Steve Mannheim. This book goes into detail about Walt Disney's final (and unrealized) dream: an Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow (EPCOT, not to be confused with Epcot the theme park), which would have been built in Florida. The dominant modes of transportation in this model city would have included monorails, PeopleMovers, bicycles, and electric carts. (There would not have been a single traffic light in EPCOT.) Each house-dwelling resident might have had their home connected to an AVAC trash collecting system. Thus their trash would have been sucked through underground pipes to a central processing facility. (Biodegradable waste would have been composted.) This was Disney's solution to noisy, messy garbage trucks. Mail might also have traveled through tubes. Walt Disney's team was also looking into solar power, alternative sewage treatment, and waste water systems. However, before any of these plans could reach fruition, Disney died. Some of these ideas have been implemented to some extent in cities, but monorails and PeopleMovers are still regarded as theme park attractions. EPCOT would have been a practical demonstration of these concepts.---------- TENDING THE WILD by M. Kat Anderson. It's about how California's First People interacted with the land. The concluding portion emphasizes the important role indigenous people should have in preserving and restoring our environment. ----------THE WORLD WITHOUT US by Alan Weisman. Weisman explores what Earth might be like if humans were to suddenly disappear (e.g., by disease, Rapture, mass alien abduction, or whatever) but his intent is to portray what the planet would be like if we humans were more conscious of our impact on the environment and acted accordingly. It's a page-turner.------------WE WILL NOT FORGET: THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF LAVALAS IN HAITI

HeroesI made this list about four years ago. Everything on it is still true, but I'm going to stop adding to it. I don't like talking about this kind of thing on MySpace. *Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.*No More Victims, providing hospitalization for injured Iraqi children. *Winona LaDuke and other Native American activists that she profiles in her book All Our Relations. I just finished a second book by LaDuke "Last Standing Woman." Now that I'm finished with it, there's a void in my life. *Malalai Joya, an Afghan female parlaimentarian who risked her life to speak out against Afghanistan's warlords. She is loved by the people of her country--both men and women--but her life remains in constant danger from the warlords. *Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the twice-democratically-elected president of Haiti who the U.S. threw out in 2004, along with thousand of other democratically-elected Haitian politicians.(See: Haiti Action) *People who go to Colombia--many at their own expense and risk--to help Colombians who are trying to stay out of the fighting. These volunteers include individuals and members of Global Exchange and Fellowship of Reconciliation. *Rep. Maxine Waters, who stood up to the Bush administration on behalf of Haitian President Aristide, the victim of a U.S-backed coup. (See: www.haitiaction.net) *Marla Ruzicka *No More Deaths, a humanitarian group that helps refugees who try to cross the U.S.-Mexican border and counters the work of the Minute Men.*Amy Goodman of Pacifica Radio (see Democracy Now!) *Reverend Billy. *There's more, but I'm sure most people stop reading this by now. Still reading???!!! Here are some heroes who I know personally (activists): Nina Z., Susan A., Jennifer M., Cat V.

About me:

"Haiti became the first Black Republic in 1804 when its enslaved people defeated Napoleon's army, the most powerful of its day, and abolished slavery. Ever since, Haiti has stood for Black liberation and the liberation of oppressed people everywhere. Haiti offered Simon Bolivar refuge, guns, and other supplies and led the way for the abolition of slavery throughout the Americas. The colonial powers have punished Haiti ever since..." -- Porto Alegre Declaration on Haiti, January 2005

Must-see film: THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED
I believe the rest of the movie can be downloaded here.

I've been going to community peace vigils two or three times a week since late 2002. I wish the end was in sight, but as the t-shirt slogan says, "I'm already against the next war." My lifestyle is a bit unusual compared to many people. I flush my toilet with saved bath/shower water (vis-a-vis a bucket). My car was stolen in March of '08. My first inclination was to replace it, but I'm finding I'm getting along okay without it (even here in L.A. with its cumbersome mass-transit), so I may not get another one. As someone said in the film Culture Jam, "If everyone lived like Americans, we would need three earths." (It's been said on Pacifica Radio said that we'd actually need seven earths if everyone lived like Americans.) I've been a vegetarian since January 1986, and watching films such as The Meatrix (not to be confused with The Matrix) and Baraka is making me want to eat less dairy products. I still eat eggs but only cage-free eggs (i.e., the chickens that lay the eggs aren't locked in tiny cages their entire lives), which are available at Trader Joe's and other places. --------UPDATE (2005): I'm now off milk products. I just learned what Monsanto has been doing to cows to increase milk production, bolvine growth hormone, which enlarges their utters, inflicting excruciating pain (see the film The Corporation).

A portrait of Pocahontas painted while she was in London in 1616. She died the following year of smallpox at age 21. There's more info.about her in my blog of April 15, 2008 (archived under "older").

Toypurina

Toypurina led a revolt against the San Gabriel Mission of California in 1785. Altogether, there were seven documented uprisings at this mission (though, Huell Howser and others wouldn't have us think so). "There was never peace. Ever," Mark Acuna, a Tongva, recently said.

Who I'd like to meet:
Congratulations! You have made a very wise choice in seeking my friendship. However, as anyone on my Friends List will tell you, the approval process for making it on here is pretty rigorous and involved. (FYI, I've received, and turned down, over 12 friend requests from "Tom." Yes,that "Tom.") Since I'm feeling generous today, here are some helpful hints: I could use a digital audio recorder and a camcorder. I want my own compost toilet (or an Incinolet) but can't afford one. Also, I need expertise in online publishing and advice from an entertainment lawyer. A Trader Joe's gift card is always welcome. (BTW, I spend $16-$24 there each week.)

Whether or not you have what it takes to make it onto my Friends List, you should learn a lot about yourself by going through the approval process--your strengths and weaknesses. Good luck!

Hi Dude,

a HUGE thank you for the Buffy stuff, especially the link you sent, I've book marked it.

I enjoyed the Amy Goodman video, I'd never heard of her but she puts out an excellent message.

Don't know if you've come across these guys before, The KLF? But over here there is a direct action group called Reclaim the Streets. At least once a year hundreds if not thousands of people turn out to a secret location...usually a very busy city street...where they take along tents, deck chairs, picnics, sand pits, paddling pools etc. The KLF bought an ex army tank which they turned into a mobile sound system, so they're there belting out music. Then when the cops turn out (they are legally allowed to seize sound systems if causing a public nuisance!!!), they just batten down the hatches and trundled off. It's great to see an entire street randomly closed down and turned into a beach!

We have an under groud news sheet, all run on donations, they've gone digital now, so if you go to www.schnews.org.uk you'll be able to sign up and keep up to date with the truth of what goes on over here, and indeed globally. If you have something to add they'll more than likely cover it.

These are the guys that initially funded the schnews. After watching this you'll understand why they felt driven to get word out...it's pretty heavy! One of our good family friends was there...somewhere out there there is footage of him saying, 'how much is this costing the tax payer? All we want to do is sit about and drink tea!!!' But this was Thatchers Britian! And this stuff has only just begun to see the light in the past few years, there was a media close down on all info!

Wow, thanks for the Buffy vids. I'd never seen or heard of the first one before. I've been a HUGE fan of hers since first discovering her in my teens, but living in the back of beyond and in the uk, it was often difficult getting hold of her stuff! I recall years ago, when Illuminations was released, I only discovered it through a half heard pronouncement on the radio, I thought he'd said Hullucinations! So when a member of my family went to the big city he was issued with instructions to trawl record shops until it was found! Said relative was 'not' amused that he'd been treated like a weirdo at loads of shops while asking for hullucinations! Hehehe. But someone finally worked out what he was looking for and he came home with Illuminations and an ear bashing for me!

However, I think you might enjoy this artist, Faithless, I'm not sure if his stuff made it to your part of the world? But this man is special...

WRITE ABOUT THIS! TELL EVERYONE!

For cybersecurity purposes

Two bills introduced giving the President the power to deem a private network part of the nation’s critical infrastructure and shut it down for cybersecurity reasons also gives the Commerce Secretary the power to access network data outside of oversight.

The Big Brother vibe coming off both is reminiscent of a demanding report submitted before Obama even took office. About a month after Election Day, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) issued a report called Securing Cyberspace for the 44th President.

Heard of the military-industrial complex? The CSIS is likely where they meet to carpool.

The recommendations in the report, ignored by the previous administration, are sweeping and demanding. The principle minds behind it hailed from the CIA, the US Navy, Microsoft, Sun, AT&T, ICANN, Lockheed Martin, Cisco, and GE—among a slew of others—and likely those minds felt confident they’d get a more sympathetic ear from the new President. And they were likely right. They’d get that from Congress, too.

Senators Jay Rockefeller and Olympia Snowe introduced legislation last week echoing much of what the CSIS report was looking for, which is primarily a set of standards network operators are to live up to—more on that in a bit. One bill creates the office of cybersecurity czar, called a National Cybersecurity Adviser, who will oversee national network security. Confirmed by the Senate, the cybersecurity czar will have the highest security clearance necessary to monitor infrastructure networks and will be a party to secret initiatives.

Thanks to the Cybersecurity Act of 2009, the cybersecurity czar will be advised by a panel stakeholders from government, private, academic, and nonprofit sectors, much like the signatories to CSIS’s report.
Also under the longer bill, the President can order the disconnection of any federal or private critical infrastructure network during e
