RecycleMania 2008 has begun. Check back here often for news, photos, videos and standings updates!
Over a 10-week period, campuses compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. The main goal of this event is to increase student awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization.

Two prominent land owners in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica have agreed to donate a site for the University for a Sustainable Future. A formal announcement of this donation was made at an international news conference held near the Papagayo Peninsula on September 5, 2007. This was followed by a formal reception honoring the work of Dr. Jane Goodall.
Your donation will help build the University for a Sustainable Future. Funds are urgently needed for master plan development, facility construction, program development, and more.
This My Space page is great! Recyclemania has been a great way to encourage the on campus community to be more involved. I work for a medical school. We don't have teams that compete against other schools. This competition has given us a way to compete and it has strengthed our recycling program. There is more interest in recycling and more people asking us to find ways to recycle more. We made it into the top 10 in a few categories this year and we hope to make improvements that will keep us there next year or get us into the top 5. Watch out maniacs we're coming for you next year!
Harvard of the East, who are you kidding! What is that story about the family who wanted their only son to go to Harvard, but after being rejected came out to the West and founded Stanford? I think the numbers will show that Stanford helds its own in this competition. We do have the longest running University recycling program - started in 1976 as a class project and became an continuous program in 1978 - next year we will be 30 years old! Recyclemania no doubt will help us recycle even more over the next year. This contest generated a lot of interest and fun for our campus! Oh - and what about Univ of California, Davis? Where did they end up in the competition? Lin King and his crew called us out as newbies (our campus loved the video) - well we took that challenge and I can't wait to see the results and how we newbies lined up with UC Davis.
Well, all the reporting is over and all that remains is for the dust to settle. Hopeful as I am that Harvard's name will rise higher in the standings, I am confident that we did more recycling because of RecycleMania than we otherwise would have. When it's over, I hope those of you that have scored particularly high will tell us your secrets. One already slipped out about Rutgers--the "Shred-athon" Confidential Paper drive during RecycleMania. You'll hear about that at Harvard next year! In any case, I hope Harvard beats Stanford when all results are tallied. The "Harvard of the West" should take its rightful place in submission to the East Coast patriarch. Good thing Julie Muir is not on this blog or I'm sure I'd hear about that one! All the best to you 'Maniacs!
