THE ORCHESTRA
We are classical musicians, artists, and thinkers united in our commitment to our audiences: to REDefine classical music programming, to REDesign the concert experience and classical music.
Red was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 2001 by a volunteer group of arts patrons and musicians. Red educates, entertains, and inspires its audiences by presenting a unique, multi-sensory, and memorable music experience.
Red is setting new standards for imaginative musical programming by presenting music in collaboration with other artistic disciplines such as film, visual arts, opera, theater, poetry, and literature. Core to our mission is an intense focus on cultural renewal and revitalization. Red strives to expand our audiences' experiences by melding innovative style with the traditional orchestral experience.
Mission
Red {an orchestra}'s mission is to develop diverse musical audiences through innovative programs, which connect music with other artistic disciplines to produce engaging and entertaining performances.
Goals
REDiscover classical music: With a focus on cultural renewal and revitalization, Red {an orchestra} seeks to develop new audiences for the performing arts through a creative mission that presents music in light of contemporary culture.
Artistic Programming
Under the leadership of our Artistic Director and Conductor, Jonathan Sheffer, Red has completed its fifth successful season and is currently presenting the 2007-2008 season.
Artistic highlights from the first five seasons include:
The Importance of Being Zappa: A special concert to celebrate the music that inspired the genius of Frank Zappa and Red's version of Zappa's own work.
Puppets and Spain: A larger-than-life-size puppet show presented by the Cleveland Museum of Art with puppeteer, Basil Twist
Celluloid Copland: A critically-acclaimed performance that included Appalachian Spring, and a rarely-seen film documentary with music by Copland
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad King: A semi-staged theater presentation of the madness of George III with music of Haydn and English modernist Peter Maxwell-Davies
Ethel/Red: Red joined forces with Ethel, an amplified string ensemble from New York, to give world premieres of works commissioned by Red.
A New Amahl: A story of poverty, wealth, sacrifice, and miracles brought to life through the dreams of an urban boy by life-sized puppets.
Thanks for the add. Your programs look very interesting. For many, many years now, I've had IMMENSE respect and admiration for Mr. Jonathan Sheffer. Ever since listening to his superb "Omen IV: The Awakening" score (music which is much, much better than the movie!!) and seeing his conducting credits on flawlessly-performed, and extremely difficult, scores such as Alien³ and Batman Returns. I wish I could attend your concerts! Unfortunately, I'm in L.A. but should the opportunity ever arise to collaborate with Mr. Sheffer, I'd probably feel like the luckiest guy on the planet. We are allowed to dream, are we not? :)
