It's a real privilege watching David Mamet's new film. Personally, I love MMA. And to see someone of Mamet's caliber tackling this important sport is quite a treat. Redbelt is a martial arts movie that gets into the heart of the fighter without exploiting Eastern philosophy. The fighting sequences are raw and realistic. This isn't your typical Jean-Claude Van Damme movie where the opponent waits for someone to throw a measly punch. In fact, the fights look like something you'll see in UFC or Pride Fight. Indeed, the world of MMA is respected in Redbelt. You even see Dan Inosanto given an award. (For those of you who don't know, Inosanto helped revolutionize martial arts).
David Mamet is known for writing a number of influential plays and movies (I wrote about him here and here). He's directed some of my favorite films like House of Games and Homicide. Redbelt is vintage Mamet, but the story is like a contemporary retelling of a Samurai movie. I enjoyed it.
this movie looks great. love to finally see a well done, serious movie with true MMA stylists in it, using realistic (if somewhat theatrical) techniques.
looks to have a great cast as well. Solid acting for a change to back up some solid action.
as a filmmaker and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, this film looks like a gift from heaven!
