The Bike decided to continue to bring you the best possible entertainment that they possibly can, but sweeten the pot even more by putting on more shows with FREE COVER! In the months to come, you will find that most of our shows will not have a cover charge. There will be a few big shows that are the exception, but most will be free. SUNDAY JULY 5th 7:30-9:30pm THE FURY BEAT
Rhythm-oriented pop; a multitude of song styles more-or-less branch out from Soul music (soul, funk, reggae, afro-beat, trip-hop, bossa-nova, etc.)
Instrumentation: Mark sings and plays acoustic and electric guitar, often using an old Akai sequencer as his backing band. The songs are orchestrated using multiple layers of homemade drum samples and an analog synth for basslines. But the main focus is on the voice and the melodies of the songs.
Mark grew up on Vashon Island and started singing rock and folk songs at the age of 19 (started out at an open mic at the Happy Garden Restaurant) and soon formed a band with fellow upstarts Tony Clementi, Kwab Copeland and Josiah Palmer. They were called Grimus, and they started by playing covers of the Clash and the Police along with their nascent attempts at songwriting, but became something of a local sensation for a bit, releasing a couple of cassette albums which still turn up at Granny's Attic on occasion.
But that was the early 90's........after that Mark played in many musical endeavors with many brilliant people including Mike Dumovich, Josh Ayala, and Ron Hook, who was a great role model and guide to him as an artist. Mark moved to Seattle in his late twenties and after immersing himself in city culture and music, he had another burst of creativity. This culminated a body of songs which were composed at the turn of the century which he gave the title of "The Fury Beat" because of his love of the Beat and the furious passion it inspires in people. Mark wanted to make songs that you can move to with lyrics that are sublime and poetic. The bossa nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim was a big influence for him in terms of conveying emotion through pure melody while having an intoxicating rhythm. Mark has never thought of himself as a huge Elvis Costello fan, but he thinks his singing voice owes a lot to him in hindsight. And Mark is a huge fan of many Soul music icons like Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, Bob Marley, James Brown, Fela Kuti.......the list goes on. The work of Radiohead has also been a huge influence on the way Mark thinks about writing.
So after about 8 years of putting his music on hold while he started his masonry business, Mark is bringing The Fury Beat back to the people as a one-man-show. Every time Mark performs will be a little different in terms of the backing music as he plans to regularly remix and rearrange his songs over time. At some point he’ll have a whole drum section backing him up. But for now, it's just Mark.
In the past, some of these songs have been arranged for a large group of players, but for now Mark is opting for giving it a more stripped-down feel and emphasizing the more subtle qualities of playing with an electronic setup. Mark is interested in the use of sampled sound to create a large pallet of musical imagery and mood, which he wants to explore even more. All-Ages FREE COVER!

SATURDAY JULY 11th 9:30PM DUDLY TAFT BLUES OVERKILL
Dudley Taft grew up in a country called the "Midwest", where he learned the values of friendship, roots blues, rock 'n' roll and a good ear of corn. Local guitar hero Rob Swaynie in Indianapolis taught Dudley the value of music theory interspersed with B.B King, Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top riffs. Taking his newfound skills with him, he founded the band “Space Antelope” with friend Trey Anastasio (of Phish Fame) in high school. Dudley moved to Seattle in the summer of 1990, joining the Seattle band “Sweet Water”. After touring the states with “Monster Magnet”, “Candlebox” and “Alice in Chains”, and recording two albums for Atlantic he left the band to resurrect “Second Coming”. More touring followed with an album on Capitol records and a taste of success thanks to the single “Vintage Eyes” which made it to #10 on the Rock Radio charts. Older and wiser, Dudley has now turned his attention back to the roots of the music that inspired him to pick up the guitar. Dudley is also member of the KZOK band Spike and the Impalers.
Evan Sheeley is one of Seattle’s legendary bassists, having played, recorded and toured with TKO, Q5, and Randy Hansen, among others. A friend of Dudley’s since the early nineties from Seattle Music, Evan is now the owner and operator of Bass Northwest, which has been selling top-end bass gear is Seattle for fifteen years. Evan brings his musical tastes to the songlist as well, with some Hendrix, Jeff Beck Group, Bluesbreakers and more.
Scott Vogel is the type of drummer that never drops a beat. Unassuming and humble, he sometimes scares even himself with his hard-hitting bombastic grooves. While beating around Seattle, Scott recorded for Virgin records with “Reverend” and toured the world (ok, Korea). He is the foundation of Blues Overkill, skillfully moving from shuffle to swing to straight-ahead rock beats. 21+ FREE COVER!
SUNDAY JULY 12th 7:30PM THE FELT HATS
The Felt Hats were conceived in the foothills of the Transylvanian plateau, next to the hot coals of a dying fire and after a bottle of local red wine. But they eventually made the journey to the land of Bill Monroe and Jimi Hendrix.
Today, The Felt Hats can be found in the dark corners of small pubs seducing old men to buy rounds for the young couples with long hair and no money. Tomorrow, they will catch the next train filled with rich folks eating in a fancy dining car, drinking coffee and smoking big cigars.
The Felt Hats are Noah Dolan, Shane Jewel and Andre Sapp. They play original songs, ancient melodies, familiar tunes and spontaneous improvisations on viola, guitar and mandolin. All ages. FREE COVER!

McDougall, out of Portland and a good friend of Hillstomps, will perform an acoustic set to open the show. In a time where many find more and more slipping from their grasp, McDougall points to a simpler life where hope is prevalent - his story walks the path away from the dismal, material-minded world and towards a place of peace among friends, family and the Almighty.
Portland Oregon junkbox blues duo HILLSTOMP is infamous for digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music, recycling traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country blues stomp. North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia, and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Somehow it works.
Despite their homemade instruments and novel approach, Hillstomp is no novelty act. Hillstomp's memorable live performances tap into a magic that cannot be rehearsed, converting outlaws and traditionalists alike from skeptics into preechers.
After two widely-acclaimed studio albums, the band hopes to capture some of that live energy on a new album titled After Two but Before Five. The album was recorded live recently on two nights in the Northwest. The band's previous albums "The Woman that Ended the World" and "one word" are available on the web at www.HILLSTOMP.com.
TROLLS COTTAGE (Roots Music/Acoustic/Rock)
Trolls Cottage packed the house last January like no other bands have ever been able to, thanks to the warm welcome by friends and family that came out to support the hometown boys. You think it's hot outside? It's gonna be smokin' hot in the room with TC throwing down some beats. Trolls Cottage is returning to The Red Bicycle after quite a few months away for another epic show!
The Trolls Cottage sound has been defined in many ways. Some say it is semi-acoustic rock with conscious lyrics and danceable beats. Others see have seen it different light, such as in 2002, when their live album was voted to the semi-finals of the Grammy Awards, in the Best Reggae Album category. More often than not, Trolls Cottage has been described as unique, having developed a sound that makes the group stand out from the oceans of other bands. They are enjoyed by a wide range of people, especially when performing at outdoor festivals where the crowds are so diverse. They have released four full length CD's with another soon to be. The energy this band brings to a performance is exhilarating and most certainly compels the audience to get up and dance.
Self promoted tours and self-released albums have garnered the group serious attention from local and national publications such as a recent big feature in the 35th Anniversary Issue of Powder Magazine. While they have mostly stuck to larger clubs around Seattle and neighboring cities, Trolls Cottage has also completed several West Coast Tours that have included shows in British Columbia, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington and the Hawaiian Islands. Over the years Trolls Cottage has shared the stage with many international acts like Luke Dube, Gregory Isaacs, John Brown’s Body, Culture, Eek A Mouse and Clinton Fearon at local venues and festivals such as Bumbershoot, Folklife and Island Earthfair.
They'll have copies of their latest CD entitled "Let It Burn", which features 12 songs that were recorded at different times over the past year. TC took the 7 songs from the Chasing Trains EP and mixed them together with 5 new tracks. Wow! What a triple bill! 21+. $8 COVER!
SATURDAY JULY 18th-STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL-9PM SIDESTREET RENY & NATALIE WOULDN'T & GEORGETOWN ORBITS - SKA SHOW!
SIDESTREET RENY
Yep....we are bringing back SIDESTREET RENY by popular demand!
(Blues/Roots/Folk) Reny and Bell (together for 14 years) blend bluesy/funky finger-style and slide on National Resonator guitar, original poignant songwriting and solid straight forward grooves. Drawing mostly from pre-war blues, roots and folk music with a little old school rap, calypso and dancehall reggae, SSR manage to forge their own sound and push musical boundaries in an era when many other musicians strive to sound the same.
In the last 20 plus years of Reny's career, he has recorded everything from folk rock to hip hop, reggae, and of course the blues. The SSR sound is one that Reny has spent the last 12 years cultivating; producing a gumbo of originality, where Delta Blues simmers with urban and carribean accents, completing this rootsy stew with wordy lyrics that showcase his unique "side street" perspective. Always weary of the traditions he represents, SSR navigates the modern musical landscape with a deep love for all that has come before, while still staying creative and vital, and constantly striving to make proud those who created that very framework on which his music is built.
The result of their efforts is a seemingly organic blend of the elements, sewing 100 plus years of American music into a rich tapestry of eclectic yet somehow familiar sounds all their own... Like everything, and nothing you've ever heard, all at once.
NATALIE WOULDN'T
Formed by members of Moon Ska Records recording artists Steve Mandl, Aaron Simms and Rick Dybvad of Easy Big Fella, Natalie Wouldn't entered the music scene in Seattle in 2001. The trio of singer-songwriters pulled together a tasty pop 6 piece with the addition of various players along the way including Shawn Brockman, Tom Adams, Kevin Crosby, Ken Pendergrass and Mike Fanning.
The song writing flowed, and the quite original blend of Ska, Soul and Rock-and-roll was born. Combined with in-your-face, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, Natalie Wouldn't's material soon had the band working the larger clubs in and around Seattle. From Seattle's Fenix Underground to the Folklife Festival and Victoria Ska Fest, Natalie is on the move.
The new CD ["Ska, Soul, Rock and Roll"] reflects the kind of true collaboration that happens when a band develops a sound live in rehearsal and on the stage. The current 6 piece line-up is sharp and sophisticated as the live show proves; not only a stunning collection of talent, but a shared vision of the direction Natalie Wouldn't is taking as a band. The mix of songs recently recorded by Natalie Wouldn't includes catchy new tunes such as such as "This is the End", "Doggone" and "One of Those Days", as well as earlier fan favorites.
Natalie Wouldn't is currently headlining shows as well as opening for traveling bands such as The English Beat, The Suburban Legends, Bad Manners, The Toasters, MU330, Westbound Train, The Phenomenauts and Satori at major venues in the Seattle area.
THE GEORGETOWN ORBITS
The Georgetown Orbits boast a heavy regimen of traditional Ska and upbeat, roots-influenced Reggae. They are turning heads in the Northwest as one of the few bands to pay tribute to the old sounds of Jamaican Ska, a style which has gained notable popularity in Seattle since the band’s conception in late 2004.
The nationally distributed 7” single, My Baby’s Okay, released on Olympia’s Dead End Social Club label, made its musical mark in February of 2006. The following summer was spent performing a solid set classic Reggae and Ska at the Seattle Weekly Music Awards Showcase, Northwest Folklife Festival, Victoria Ska Festival, and Seattle’s Hempfest.
In their relatively short career, the Georgetown Orbits have already played with such prominent names as the Skatalites (Jamaica), Clinton Fearon (Jamaica), the English Beat (UK), Bad Manners (UK) the Toasters (NY), The Aggrolites (CA), Westbound Train (Boston), Mike Park (owner, Asian Man Records), Warsaw Poland Brothers, Stiff Upper Lips, Natalie Wouldn't, and other local and touring bands. To date, they have played in numerous venues around Seattle, including Studio Seven, the Crocodile, El Corazon, the Vera Project, the Showbox, the Nectar Lounge, and Neumo's.
With the release of the group’s first full-length debut album in August of 2007, the sounds of the Orbits have further penetrated the airwaves of the Northwest earning airplay on 90.3FM KEXP, 91.3FM KBCS (Seattle), 90.7FM KSER (Everett), 89.9FM KGRG (Auburn), KPSU 1450AM (Portland) and several other college and independent radio stations across the nation. Fans of reggae, dancehall, funk, soul, jazz, ska, and rock are now singing along to choruses while they dance to the hard-hitting rhythms and tastefully harmonized horn lines of the Georgetown Orbits. $8 COVER!

SUNDAY AUGUST 16th 8pm BLVD & SOULEYE
Fusing live instruments with electronic production techniques, BLVD combines elements of hip-hop, house and breakbeat to create a refined and progressive musical experience for its audience. Drummer Dylan McIntosh and bassist Tripp Bains lock into deep, subwoofing grooves while electric guitarist Curtis Sloane adds tight, rhythm based, melodic progressions and heavily effected looping patterns. BLVD improvises just enough to lead audiences through unexpected segues and hands-in-the-air crescendos. As a trio, they rely heavily on their skills in the studio. By creating samples and synth lines they combine an organic live sound with the repetition and structure of electronic music.
Souleye, a Colorado based MC, believes that music is a true healing art. Souleye chooses to perform all his shows freestyle, completely
improvisational, because he believes that it allows the audience to be present and involved in the creation and collective energy of the music. Each performance is genuine and can never be replicated much like life.
Not afraid to break the paradigm Souleye has been bridging gaps and crossing paths between multiple musical genres from Hip hop, Drum and Bass, Electronic, Blue Grass and Funk.
"What are we going to do to fix this earth before the time's up and we all miss it?/When will humans finally accept that love is the answer and we mustn't forget that?" This is an uncommon sentiment coming from an uncommon musician.
His ability to freestyle gives him the opportunity to sit in with any band or Dj bringing the vibe of sincere energy and love to each performance. Souleye is constantly touring and is currently collaborating with artists such as Zilla, Bassnectar, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Michael Franti, The String Cheese Incident, The Glitch Mob, On The One, Pangea, Everyone Orchestra at events inculding Burning Man, Cochella, Jam Cruise, and Shambhala. Whether hearing one of his albums, or witnessing his energetic freestyle, the Souleye experience is definitely a journey of both sound and spirit.

For those who haven't heard, we'll be in the studio these next few months to record a new album with the renowned reggae singer, Eyon Irie. After that it's summer shows and writing songs for the next Orbits album!
In the meantime, if you don't have our self-titled cd yet, you can still pick it up on CD Baby and Itunes.
And swing by our myspace site to check out our new videos!
