First up was the powerhouse from Reno, Nev., Redcel, who caught the crowd's attention starting from sound check. The band tore through its opening song "Fear the System," in which guitarist Ben Perry weaved an unresolving guitar progression building into an explosive chorus. Singer TJ Puliz fronted the four-piece group, reminding us vocally in style from the harshness of Phil Anselmo of Pantera to at times the same rich tone of Lajon Witherspoon Sevendust. not giving the audience chance to rest, the band merged right into its second song, "Where." Drummer Eric Olivas stuck to a solid, bare bones rock groove to carry the band through the set -- opening the hats a little to add some heavy sludge to the choruses and throwing some syncopated ride bell taps in to ad texture. Third song of the set, "Sorry," gave the audience a chance to catch a breath with its slow, urban jazzy bassline provided by the talented Marcus Mayhall. Redcel seemed to have the modern rock sound down. With verses of tense, building progressions demanding release, and then slamming that release with a chorus of catchy vocal hooks and open guitar riffs. But before you could pigeon hole them to one style, they'd drop a bomb like the bluesy hard rock number, "Black." Bass chords are so rarely attempted in songs because of how muddy bass tones are. Few bass players ever attempt to use them, let alone, pull them off. Redcel's closing song, "Circus," showed how it's done. Though the set failed to inspire a pit for the out-of-town band playing the opening spot, the crowd-perhaps none of which had ever heard the band before, certainly paid attention from start to finish.
