Young British Artists - Small Waves EP (RDC 018)
1. Bring The Sun
2. Ovation
3. White Sheet
4. Small Waves
Red Deer Club Recordings release what is definitely the least Red Deer Club record yet in the form of "Small Waves" EP, the debut 7" from Young British Artists.
Bass playing singer Leo and keyboard player Simon are friends from school near Carlisle and met guitarist Sebastian when they were at university together in Leeds. Forming a close friendship over a love of good music they decided that once they'd graduated, rather than get proper jobs, they'd move to Manchester and form a band along with drummer Benjamin, a friend of Sebastian's from growing up just outside Brighton.
References to shoegaze and the 80s new wave and garage scenes are obvious and not unwelcome but Young British Artists' infuences are broader and their ambitions higher. Their songs are intelligent and emotive, unabashedly pop and performed with energy and conviction. A squall of distorted guitars and vocals are urged along by tight drums and airy synths; developing soundscapes ease their way into raunchy three minute pop riffs. Their debut release, recorded at Golden Hum Studios with Dan Lea (By The Fireside), "Small Waves" EP is Young British Artists' first attempt to capture their developing sound.

Paddy Steer - Dragon's Breath (RDC 017)
Paddy is a Zelig-like character along the timeline of Manchester’s musical activity. It’s a testament to his musicality that he has played with such a wide range of music and artists over the years, be it as a bass player, drummer, Hawaiian guitarist etc. or all these roles at the same time.
His own Homelife project released five albums in recent years, Homelife's sound was intricate but with a warm sense of wonder, a balance of songs and instrumentals. Many musicians contributed to the Homelife project, brewed slowly by Paddy in his attic before being taken out as a small orchestra for some very unique concerts.
Paddy’s attic studio is like the magic workshop – not only does he make music in there, but he also makes instruments, mends junk, films animations and constructs robots.
Never one to blow his own trumpet, Paddy quietly gets on with developing his craft. There is something of the fairy-tale cobbler working late into the night in order to make the finest shoes in the kingdom, or maybe the musical elves strike up while he's in bed.
On 'Dragons Breath', essentially an instrumental solo project recorded in parallel with Homelife's 'Exotic Interlude' (a new song-based album), there seems to be a link with his current interest in animation. It’s a cartoon-like music with parallels to Carl Stalling (Looney Tunes genius); dense with events, new textures and the colours of children’s paintings, 'Dragons Breath' sounds like a Swiss cuckoo clock made of egg boxes and horsehair, glued together by an African Moog player in a Vietnamese iron monger's shop.

Awesome Wells - The Highs And Lows Of De Witt A Stanton (RDC 016)
Awesome Wells has been recording music and hibernating in bedrooms in valleys, kitchens by railways and bunkers in the city for several years.
His music envisages a huge soundscape bringing in many elements of his diminished fantasy travels. Wandering the world through the mediums of sound collages, most likely on his own or with the kind help of a cat called Flea. It definitely included a smashed china plate in a plastic bag, a flugelhorn from Prague held together with green tape, a Jew’s harp from Venice, the birds in a graveyard in Nottingham in spring, bits of electronic synthesising and effect tom-foolery. A girl mucking about with a piano, a knackered old zither, a Dictaphone recording of a Ukrainian train station at dawn, sleigh-bells at dusk, an over-used loop sampler, some old jam-jars in a plastic bag, a nut-cracker named Klad, a lampshade, a child’s violin, and probably some other stuff too. This all makes for a wonderful sound, taking in influences from A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Animal Collective and Dexys Midnight Runners, to name a few.
During this hibernation Wells stepped out to juggle various instruments and noises for The Voluntary Butler Scheme and as a result of parental encouragement from band-mates and friends alike, decided to open up his confused world of sound collage to other people.

Benjamin Wetherill - Laura (RDC 014)
Recorded in a disused 19th-century palace on the outskirts of Budapest, Benjamin Wetherill's first album captures the intimacy of a delicate folk idiom along with the innovation of original technique and approach. Wetherill, a Leeds native who has been making his own music for almost a decade, plays intricate fingerpicked guitar passages, and sings with a lilting style unlike anybody recording today. A startling listen for anyone looking for truly talented musicians wholly focused on their own vision.
Jeremy Barnes, A Hawk and a Hacksaw's inventive songwriter, heard Wetherill while touring and offered to produce his debut album. Barnes enlisted his Hun Hangar Ensemble of Hungarian musicians to assist in the recording, delicately expanding Wetherill's songs to include a feather orchestra of light touches and subtle accents, blending sentiments of pre-war European jazz with early English pathos.
The result is Laura, an album as emotional as it is detailed and fragile. Folk music has enjoyed a resurgence of late, but with Wetherill one always seems to get something refreshingly different - true, original music in a manner never quite done before, with the capacity to combine a mystifying sense of the early 19th century with a 20th century outlook. The effect is startling.

By The Fireside - Day Of The Burning (RDC 012)
London based musician and producer Daniel Lea is enchanted by the forgotten narratives of yesterday. Trawling the past for visual and lyrical inspiration, gathering snippets from forgotten histories, By The Fireside is his music box and storytelling vehicle.
Inspired by dialogue and imagery from old noir classics, world cinema and the silent era, Daniel Lea welds unique influences into his music. Lea’s first EP, ‘Battles That Add Up To None’, drew heavily from his grandfather’s time in the air force in WW2, quickly catching the attention of the peeps down at Rough Trade Records. Rating it amongst the top releases of 2005, the mix of ‘lo-fi loops with homemade ramshackle folk’ found a healthy audience and By The Fireside was heralded as one to watch.
Having recently built his own studio, Lea buries himself in inspiration within his Stoke Newington hive of creativity - Golden Hum Studios. Taking the role of producer, he spent four months recording the debut album from Martin Craft (ex of Sidewinder) for 679 Recordings. He is currently producing the hotly tipped debut album by ‘Dark Captain Light Captain’ to be released on Loaf Recordings later in the 2008.
Focusing again on By The Fireside, Lea released his second EP, ‘Then Came Noon’ in 2006, sharing its predecessor’s critical success and accompanied by extensive touring. After Lea returned to Golden Hum for over a year and a half recording and experimenting to create what was to become the debut album, "The Great Hartford Fire". Inspired by the little known mystery of The Hartford Circus Fire in June 1944, the album was released in February by Rogue Records (Inertia) in Australia and is to be released later in the year in the U.K and Europe.
This very special release is a limited edition mini album from Manchester label red deer club. It continues the musical journey of Daniel Lea, with warm woozy harmonies and ghost note guitar crescendos that bring to mind the driving energy of Sonic Youth, Neu! and Kraut Rock with a cinematic atmosphere. Lea has spoken often of his desire to “create a world of imagery and storytelling”, and his exquisitely crafted lyrical collages presented on this mini album are testament to his limitless talent. At times as chilling as he is comforting, Lea’s fragile voice can render you breathless on first listen, and yet fill your heart with a rosy glow.
After all, the greatest stories end By The Fireside.

David A Jaycock - The Coleopterous Cuckoos Collude (RDC 010)
Named after a Hitchcock-esque nightmare in which he was set upon by a pair of hard-winged, marauding cuckoos, David A Jaycock’s second album is step forward from the pastoral motifs of his debut, incorporating an expansive country-folk sound alongside the indigenous qualities and general oddness that have made his name.
An active member of Pickled Egg recording artists Big Eyes, as well as The Big Eyes Family Players, David plays a vast selection of instruments, with his signature guitar intricacies now joined by analogue synthesizers, bowed banjos, toy piano, harmonium, even a zither. Subsequently, The Coleopterous Cuckoos Collude is an achingly beautiful work of cinematic majesty; its progressive classicism enhanced by David’s will to actively break traditional musical boundaries. Taking inspiration from players such as Segovia and John Fahey, there are drones, waltzes, dirges, sea shanties, dissonances, bells, European flavours and the sound of ghostly train journeys. “Some longer songs, some shorter songs, some singing songs”, explains David, “sinister fairground melodies, Spanish preludes, improvised laments…”
After David’s debut release, The Improvised Killing Of Uncle Faustus, achieved critical acclaim alongside his already staunchly loyal fanbase, this new album, on the celebrated Red Deer Club label, will undeniably secure David A Jaycock’s place alongside history’s truly innovative musicians.

George Thomas And The Owls - Shooting Cabin Songs (RDC 009)
Mostly recorded back in January of 2007, on George's beloved eight track tape machine, Shooting Cabin Songs shimmers and shivers with frosty mornings and dark nights, cold winds and wild moors. It's an atmosphere that's sustained throughout, from the delicately picked opening of ‘Ballad Of A Forgotten Hero’ to the closing melancholy of ‘Falling Snow.’ Elsewhere, the gorgeously torn melody of ‘On A Starry Night’ gives way to earthy homespun wisdom on ‘The Art Of Chainsaw Maintenance’ whilst the deranged shriek of ‘Mountaintop Blues’ sits almost uncomfortably alongside the gentle folk storytelling of ‘The Nine Gardens of Aberglasney.’
Delayed by touring commitments and tardy workmanship, the release of Shooting Cabin Songs brings to a close a year which both George and ourselves struggle to describe with words beyond “fun” and “tiring.” As if co-headlining the inaugural Red Deer Club tour with Liz Green and an ever-changing line-up of Owls wasn't enough, George has also managed to fit in two support tours with the legendary Viking Moses, various cameo appearances at festivals from Fife to Dorset, the recording of three new albums across woodlands, hotel bars and living rooms, and all whilst holding down a regular job to pay for it all. His claim to be proud of nothing but his work rate may sound unduly modest, but is at least justified in one respect.
However, although George will admit only to attempting to write "mildly interesting pop songs" his ability to polarise the opinions of audiences and critics alike suggests that this claim is more than a little disingenuous. Either way, here at Red Deer Club we're sure you'll agree that Shooting Cabin Songs is a beautiful record, even if "mildly interesting pop" might not be the correct term for it.

Sara Lowes - Tomorrow's Laughter (RDC 008)
"This isn’t a game I’m intent on winning,” declares Sara Lowes on the opening track from stunning new EP Tomorrows Laughter, “this is a game I wish to play...” Singing from the heart but with an infectious sense of fun behind each sunny vocal, Sara’s powerful piano melodies pack feelgood punches.
Having established a successful career as a session musician, the talent behind such a well-crafted collection of future hits is undeniable. A member of The Earlies’ live band, Sara sang on the critically-acclaimed cover of The Webb Brothers’ I’ve Been Waiting So Long, and has lent her immeasurable talents to King Creosote, Micah P. Hinson, Jim Noir and fellow Mancunian, David Potts, as well as contributing to both The Earlies’ studio albums.
The classic Sixties influences she absorbed as a teenager have informed a fresh, modern blend of pop, folk and rock’n’roll, driven by piano but steered by Sara’s rich, warm voice.
Tomorrows Laughter has been collectively produced by Sara Lowes, Nathan Sudders and studio mastermind Tom Knott, and features several of the songsmith’s previous collaborators. Between the energizing piano of I Wish to the sweet emotion of Evening Prayer, Sara Lowes emerges as a true star.
It is with great pleasure that Manchester’s premier folk night, Red Deer Club, shines the spotlight on this exceedingly special songwriter.

Hepzibah Broom - Self Titled (RDC 007)
Having hidden herself away for some time, Hepzibah Broom is now unleashed upon the world via the Red Deer label. This surely is a match made in heaven; a truly independent label and an even more independent voice, Red Deer Club proudly presents her debut EP.
Perched in a cliff high granite cottage, once home to notorious Cornish witch and wrecker Madge Figgy, lives Hepzibah Broom.
Writing, playing and recording alone, time has led Hepzibah further into her otherworldly languages. With a host of stringed instruments, bells, cymbals, shells, bones and air flute, she creates the ethereal backbone of her compositions. Swinging from a mysterious guttural chant to a sublime bird-like quiver, this is an artist of singular vocal ability.
Years spent in India experimenting with psychotropic plants have left Hepzibah with an ability to obtain the trance state in which much of her music is created.
On her return from India, Hepzibah studied herbal medicine in Sussex. She still makes herbal potions, regularly imbibing Datura to help her insomnia. Datura taken in tincture form seems to induce dreams in which epic battles are fought with the psyche.
Hepzibah’s songs are often written in Fogous*, on surrounding cliffs and in a large cave where the St Michael and St Mary ley lines are said to enter Cornwall. Rarely performing in public, Hepzibah is happily involved in her woodland rituals, herbalism and sculpture.
“Her voice is warm and true, her music matches this quality” Josephine Foster

The Moulettes - Songs From Saint Margaret's (RDC 006)
Red Deer Club presents its second 'official' release: "Songs From St Margaret's" by The Moulettes, again drawing upon the underbelly of understated musicians, they have once again unleashed a real gem.
In these days of ruthlessly overproduced studio albums, The Moulettes sought to make an mini album that would lose none of its immediacy and honesty. They chose St Margaret's church in Whalley Range, Manchester for its superior acoustics, and recorded it live in one evening, the hallowed rafters resounding with sinister string tales of desire, depravity and despair.

George Thomas And The Owls - Concert For Two Bicycles (RDC 004)
Here at Red Deer Club we are proud to present 'Concert for Two Bicycles' the debut Long Player by George Thomas and the Owls. After two years selling out of hand made cd-r compilations and running nights as Manchester’s premier folk club, we can only describe ourselves as hugely excited to be mutating into a grown up record label with this, our first official release.
We stumbled upon George last summer in Manchester, where he was playing shambolic and strangely touching live sets, claiming to be a woodcutter from the Peak District. Later, when the trees started falling down, we found this to be true. As for The Owls, it seems they're a raggle taggle bunch consisting of whoever George picks up on his travels, generally playing whatever instruments are at hand. Most recently this has involved stealing the mighty Viking Moses' band for a legendary performance at the Homegame festival, as well as an equally successful tour of the UK.
The recording of 'Concert for Two Bicycles' was split, we are told, equally between a garden shed in the Peaks, and a flat beside the railway tracks in Manchester. The resulting sound is one of humble charm, with a rare and at times almost unnerving closeness to the listener. Its an album that's full of warmth and an earthy humanity, where songs about the pleasures of the local bakery sit happily alongside those about the pests and diseases of garden flowers. They are songs that are dark like confectionery, yet hopeful like chemotherapy (he insisted we leave that in).
George himself will claim to be influenced by anything from Canadian hip hop to Welsh heavy metal, but to our ears the sound of this record lies somewhere between the picturesque ramblings of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci or The Beta Band, and the twisted storytelling of Smog or The Handsome Family.
In truth though, comparisons mean little, since this is a unique set of songs which could not have been written or recorded by anybody else. We hope you enjoy the album as much as we do!
