To seek redemption is, by definition, an attempt to reinvent oneself. For Ricardo Komboa Mireles, aka Redención (Redemption), this concept has never been an understatement. A nomadic childhood between San Francisco del Rincon Guanajuato, Mexico and various locations within Southern California has forged Redención into an MC who understands and embraces the importance of adaptability and biculturalism.
“I am a huge fan of psychology and the study of human behavior” says Redención when asked what drives his creativity. His music presents a unique perspective on life and a fresh translation of hip hop’s past, present and future. Redención’s lyrics creatively communicate a reality often unperceived and even more often misunderstood.
Having the ability to express himself fluently in both English and Spanish has opened many doors for this up-and-coming independent MC. He has been featured in hip hop publications from Spain, Mexico and the U.S. In 2007 he was featured in the “As seen on MySpace” column of holamun2.com, which observed that “Redención (Redemption) does without the lady-hatin’ machismo of many hip hop artists, concentrating his energy on a sleek flow which he hopes will shed light on the injustices of the world. His debut album, Antidepresivo (Anti-depressive), is a fierce outburst of songs that aims to disturb the peace. The record features Spanish language lyrics, classic stylings and high-end production values”.
Antidepresivo drew a global appeal which led to performances alongside Afu-Ra (US), Dead Prez (US), Immortal Technique (US), Bocafloja (Mexico), Akil-Ammar (Mexico), Intifada (Puerto Rico), La Septima (Venezuela), Malena of Actitud Maria Marta (Argentina), Olmeca (US), Skool 77 (Mexico), and Detane (US) among others.
Redención is one of six members of the Inland Empire-based collective Urban Poets Crew, which he describes as “An eclectic family of extremely talented guys that love and respect all forms and aspects of the hip hop culture. We are MCs, Poets, Musicians, Producers, DJs and Graphic Artists that are never hindered by whatever the mainstream is doing. We aren’t afraid of being disliked for being ourselves.”
His experience as a Senior Art Director in the advertising industry has taught Redención the importance of seeking spiritual balance and has fortified his desire to contribute to hip hop with music of greater significance. His “day job” relieves him of the pressure of having to conform when creating his music. In his words, “Hip hop doesn’t feed my family, it feeds my soul, so I make sure to stay true to its essence whenever I write”. His music draws inspiration from countless sources, ranging from Malcolm X (with whom he shares a birth date) to Salvador Allende, The Roots, Ricardo Arjona, Big Pun, Masta Ace, Victor Jara and Thelonious Monk.
Redención has released 1 mix tape, “L.A. Redencion Mixtape vol.1” (2003); 2 EPs “El Preludio” (2005) and “Redencion EP” (2008); and 1 LP, “Antidepresivo” (2006). He has also been featured on numerous albums, mix tapes and singles and is currently working on his second LP “Hip Hop” (1st Bilingual album, release date TBD).
Altogether, Redemption is an amalgam of sounds, styles, textures and trends that make you move, think, reflect, cry, scream, and above all, act.
