About me:
Welcome to RedHookLatino!
Want to know one of New York city’s best kept culinary secrets?
For over 30 years, artisan cooks hailing from all corners of Latin America gather in a remote corner of Red Hook Park. From spring through fall, weekends have been filled with a distinctive ambiance. In this remote and historic corner of Brooklyn, we find a place and atmosphere reminiscent of a small Latin American town, where its central plaza overflows in celebration of weekend summer glories. Its main attractions- Food and soccer games.
Local New Yorkers have come and enjoyed what many consider to be one of the best experiences in ethnic Latin cuisine. Traditional foods and recipes that are not found in restaurants, but passed down -through generations- to every artisan cook. Weather-beaten tarps, rustic setups and an open air natural environment surrounded by parkland gives this setting an original & authentic flair. Difficult accessibility to the park via public transportation and its remote & isolated location in one of New York city’s oldest neighborhoods –Red Hook- kept the food vendors of Red Hook park a well-kept secret among those food connoisseurs lucky enough to know about it, and for those who knew how to get there!
Futbol(soccer) games also happen there, where local heroes strut their stuff Beckham-style to wow the audiences. At the same time, vendors showcase their arts and crafts, while toy vendors lure countless children with curious trinkets. Best of all is the aroma that wraps everyone present –coming from the artisans’ food stands, bejeweling the best qualities that Latin cuisine has to offer. Only to the well traveled or to the homesick would this sight be all too familiar. And the more interesting for anyone interested in a unique experience –A true Latin weekend Fiesta!
Here, in Brooklyn’s backyard we find an activity considered one of the city’s best hidden culinary treasures. The home of the ‘soccer taco’ (as the New York Post named it) where the Salvadoran pupusa and the Mexican Huarache reign supreme amongst regulars. Where the distinctive taste of ceviche brings the South American coast ever closer to the Brooklyn waterfront, where the air filled with sea breeze aroma gives it even more intense tropical taste.
Now you also share our secret...we also hope you can be our guest!
