Red Letter F is a four piece rock band from Albuquerque, New Mexico which formed in 2008. The band has consisted of Mauricio Paez (vocals, guitar), John J (bass guitar, vocals), Kirk Hein (guitar, vocals)and Brad Yablonsky (drums, vocals) for the majority of its existence.
Red Letter F’s sound is a mixture of hard melodic rock and anthem like choruses. The band draws from the architecture of such artists as the Smashing Pumpkins and The Pixies in their use of quiet progressions mixed with extreme loudness. Red Letter F uses heavily layered and distorted guitar playing. Kirk Hein uses a perfect mix of vintage guitar pedals to achieve his insanely overdriven fuzz sounds while Mauricio Paez uses highly compressed modern overdriven sounds to compliment Kirk. John J primarily plays 5 string basses to provide a lower octave of bottom end to the songs. Drummer Brad Yablonsky prefers the use of slightly smaller drum sizes and brass snares to really pierce through the live performances. Mauricio is the bands primary lyricist and his vocal styling has been compared to David Bowie and Gavin Rossdale.
