Drastic times call for drastic measures they say...especially if you're name is Redlight Boogie. Born to a mixed race couple in the mid 70's, Redlight learned about the extremities in society at an early age. At the age of 9 his once tranquil home turned into hell as his parents headed for a divorce. It's during this time that young Redlight sought refuge in a fresh new wave of expression called Hip Hop. As soon as the boy heard Rapper’s Delight he knew the combination of rhythm and words was what he needed to be a part of. Redlight's starting point in Hip Hop culture was as a breakdancer and poplocker, but it was undeniable the kid had a way with words. After making a name for himself through schoolyard battles "Hurricane" as he was called at the time did his name justice. He was a force to be wreckoned with. He would be at every Hip Hop related function around town to show love to those who did the culture justice but struck fear in the hearts of those who ridiculed it. Hip Hop meant life to the him so therefore he didn't allow anybody to disrespect it. Hurricane's status was solidified in the scene with the release of his "Killertape". The mixtape showcased the mc's versatility over a 6 song set. Now that the streets and critics unanomously agreed that the he had "arrived", Hurricane started being featured alongside the biggest names in Hip Hop. Whether as support act "SupaCat,Paris,Naughty by Nature"or in the studio participating in live freestyle sessions with artists such as Kool Keith,Das EFX,Big Pun and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The kid was going head to head with the best of them! Ironically the succes and acknowledgement by the scene marked the end of the mc they had grown to love. See, drastic times had come around and so drastic measures had to be taken... Sugacane was born. As a young man in the streets, homeless and hungry...Hurricane struggled to keep his dignity as he frequented across town. Knowing this was not where he should be, he actively pursuited every legal means of survival and beat the odds. It was only after all his attempts failed to do so that the young man answered the call of the streets. Things fell into place at a rapid speed. There proved to be a million and one ways to get money out there and that's just what Sugacane did...make sugar out of shit. "Let’em know" was released as Cane's first single on a mercury sub-label. This release taught Cane about the ins and outs of the music business. He decided things would be done differently the next time he would release his music. This "next" time came when the tables had turned in Cane's favour. The young man had come up and now had serious funds to his disposal. He took these street returns and established "Now or neva records” in 2001. "You can't fool mine" was to be the first release on the label. But as Cane's street reputation grew to mythical status it started to overshadow him as an artist. Not one to accept defeat, Cane remained busy by doing support shows for major artists like Snoop doggy dog,Ludacris,Eric sermon.112,Keith sweat.Wu-tang,Onyx and many others When he was invited to headline The African Hip Hop Awards in Dakar [Senegal] , Cane was confronted with his roots and had a chance to reflect on his position in this world and beyond. He decided to take a stand in life by converting to Islam upon his return to Amsterdam. This "spiritual" measure resulted in yet another change. Cane had always been at the forefront of well documented beefs with different mc's from Rotterdam. There had been a rivalry going on between Amsterdam and Rotterdam since the 80's as the two cities competed for the title of Hip Hop capitol of The Netherlands. It was after Cane had started working on his yet to be released album "Dirty money, Clean Hands" that the tribal warfare was put to an end. A call for Hip Hop unity was established in the form of a collective supergroup called "The most Official" in 2006. The crew boasted an A-list of the best mc's from across the Netherlands and represented 3 generations of mc's. An official mixtape was released late 2006 and a video was shot in support of the lead single called "Next Block". The project was well received as well as Cane's lead role as himself in his first feature film "Bolletjes blues". A Hip Hop musical about drug human traffic between The Netherlands and Suriname. In 2008 it's realer than it's ever been as Sugacane sheds his old skin one last time to introduce himself to the world as Redlight Boogie. The embodiment of everything Amsterdam is... The man is busier than ever:Several revolutionary multi media business ventures in the works, an endorsement deal with Ecko Unltd. as well as an album in progress with heavy hitter Scram Jones from NYC. "Dirty money, Clean hands" the album has been blessed with collaborations of Redman [Def Jam], Boot Camp Clik,Onyx,Heltah sketah and Memphis Bleek [Roc-A-Fella] so far. It's promising to be the ultimate future renaissance in Hip-Hop. A new body with an old heart is the best way to put it. Brought to you by a man with a story to tell...
