Punktastic Review
EP, Red Light Runner
When anyone compares themselves to The Get Up Kids and/or Jimmy Eat World I tend to sit up and take notice and get a little bit excited. Of course Kent's Red Light Runner are not as good as either of those two rather majestic bands, but I can see the comparisons. And that's unusual as most acts who say they are influenced by those two are usually total guff. RLR are far from the finished article, but they do have a 'Static Prevails'-esque take on their songs and the vocals do sound a lot like Matt Pryor. Two very good things.
'Finally Come Back' is perhaps the song which ticks the right boxes; it's a catchy number but a slow burner. The vocals sometimes miss the note but more often than not hit the right spot. The band are clever in making the tracks melodic but not overly so. There's no predictable verse/chorus/verse progressions here. 'Silver Medal' is another song that has lovely written all over it, while 'World On Fire' is more blatant than subtle but again ticks a lot of boxes. The problem I have with this band is that sometimes they try to copy JEW a little too much by twisting and turning the instrumentation and dragging things out a little too much. One or two of the songs could do with being a little shorter, while others could do with getting to the punchline that bit quicker.
That being said I do like the road this band are taking. It sounds more 2001 than 2009 and I like it. Not too many bands are doing this type of thing and even fewer are doing it as well. If you like Further Seems Forever's first record, you may well like this band. Work in progress, admittedly, but I'd like to be kept updated.
