Movies
I just watched Little Miss Sunshine and it is the funniest, most brilliantly poignant film I have ever seen, and though I am prone to exaggeration and melodrama I tell you this now IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS FILM THEN GO FUCKING SEE IT.
About me:
"It is better to be hated for what one is than loved for what one is not."
- Andre Gide (1869 - 1951).
"You're obliged to pretend respect for people and institutions you think absurd. You live attached in a cowardly fashion to moral and social conventions you despise, condemn, and know lack all foundation. It is that permanent contradiction between your ideas and desires and all the dead formalities and vain pretenses of your civilization which makes you sad, troubled and unbalanced. In that intolerable conflict you lose all joy of life and all feeling of personality, because at every moment they suppress and restrain and check the free play of your powers. That's the poisoned and mortal wound of the civilized world."
-Octave Mirbeau (1848 - 1917).

I want to write an exquisite haiku on a dried orchid and burn it, saving the ashes in a tiny glass bottle. I want to find a deserted island and befriend a monkey, name him, become emotionally attached, then suffer the pain of sailing away, watching with ocean-eyes, as Albert tries to overcome his fear of water, and swim to his companions raft with a banana: he's crying, and shouting something... "SHALLY! SHALLY...! ALBE LARV SHALLY....!" Actually, I don't think I could handle that level of sad. I'm sure you understand what I'm talking about. Mundane mediocrity is an illness and I need a cure! Damn, I'm really down about that fictional monkey. It could become one of the saddest stories ever told. Our friendship could begin when I'm climbing a coconut tree, and I spot him, with a rudimentary noose around his neck, dangling next to some papayas. The other monkeys make fun of him, ban him from their tree swinging games. I learn that he was born on a neighbouring island, but got swept away several years ago by a tidal wave, leaving him alone with a new pack, and water phobia. His social ineptitude strikes a major chord with me, as my own experience of alienation is what caused me to discover this island and we become friends, after my fateful intervention. Cinema. *Cue sweeping, powerful music* "This summer, one woman learns that a friend can be found anywhere. "Hahaha... No, Albert, that's not what we use a toothbrush for..! " ...."AHH AHH AAH!!!".... From Miramax, comes a heart-warming tale of an outcast and castaway who must fight side by side, to return to their families. [cut to scene: I stop Albert from falling into the sea / Alb. throws an orange at my head, I give chase with sharp stick] What the critics are calling "monkey magic" for anyone who "ever wanted a best (pri)mate", is swinging to a cinema near you soon."
Do you know what it is like to not recognise the person in the mirror? Have you ever been out to a club, party or bar...whatever... and spent half the time staring at everyone in the room, wondering how they were enjoying themselves? Pure existential angst. Why are we all sat in the same building, designated for consuming intoxicating drinks? Why does it now feel painfully futile, when nothing has changed? Often, I can only numb the alienation by getting drunk. My only thoughts laid in plotting my escape from this ROOM, which only creates enjoyment through social conditioning, it seems. The longer this continues, the more I distance myself, and everyone outside of my circle of friends (and even within) begin to consider me as antisocial, dull and odd and decide they would rather just fuck. I see them as social, dull and odd. Reality is either mocking me or presenting me with the truth. The glass is half broken.
I thought I saw you the other day. My eyes continue to deceive me.
