Packa & McTavish - Spoken word / cello performance, "Talk in darkness"
Saturday January 19, 2008 7 pm st the Red Mug!!

Cellist Kathy McTavish and poet Sheila Packa will perform new work in a dialogue of music and poetry, “Talk in Darkness.”

Kathy McTavish performs experimental music and has appeared in many venues throughout the Midwest. Her cello ranges from energetic and playful to soothing and edgy. Sheila Packa has a new book of poetry, The Mother Tongue, published by Calyx Press Duluth. The poetry includes images of Lake Superior and the Iron Range, birds and migration, love and justice. Each performance of this duo is new and different. Bob Moynihan of Duluth called the performance “mesmerizing.”

Kathy McTavish’s music ranges from spare, bluesy minimalism to dense, full-bodied landscapes. She blends a distinct acoustic sound with the occasional warped echo to create live, multidimensional sound spaces. Her style has been described as haunting & soulful; evocative of the human voice.

Sheila Packa grew up on the Iron Range, is the granddaughter of Finnish immigrants, and lives in Duluth. She has published poems, short stories, and essays in many literary magazines and anthologies. Most recently, her work has been featured in New Rivers Press book, To Sing Along the Way: Minnesota Women Poets from Pre-Territorial Days to the Present, edited by Joyce Sutphen, Thom Tammaro, and Connie Wanek. She’s received two Arrowhead Regional Arts Council fellowships for poetry, two Loft McKnight Awards and, this year, a career opportunity grant from ARAC.

Paul Metzger, Tim Kaiser and the cosmic pit orchestra will be joining forces for a very special evening January 24 at 7 pm at the Red Mug.

Paul Metzger has explored the endless possibilities of stringed sound for over 20 years. His performances on modified guitar and the 21-stringed banjo are legendary. His music ranges from eastern-sounding improvisational journeys to a very vibrant, eclectic, cosmic romp through the universe of sound. He has toured widely to much acclaim and his recent cd release, "deliverance" has been met with a very enthusiastic reception.

Tim Kaiser has been producing experimental music, performance art, videos and installations at various venues for the past 20 years. He has presented work in Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Detroit, Cleveland, Canada, Cuba, Brazil, Germany, Hong Kong and Sweden. His performances are a mesmerizing blend of sound and visual elements that create very compelling journey for the listener.

Blending electric guitar (Richie Townsend) & cello (Kathy McTavish), the cosmic pit orchestra creates vivid improvisational soundscapes. With an innovative use of modes, rhythms, textures and a sense of wild, joyful abandon the cosmic pit orchestra weaves a moving, psychedelic listening experience.
